TO THE ELECTORS OF . GLADSTONE. GENTLEMEN,-I beg you will allow ro« to hy before you my Claims to your «offirages as follows : I.—l reßfiie in the district, a\id rely on the prosfierity of the people for my means of raring. 2.—1 am a staunch supporter of Sir Eobert Stout, and pledge myself to assist him if elected in carrying out his policy of the three D.'s—that is DISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH Distribution or Education DISTRIBUTION OF LAND. B.—l am in favor of Free Education, but I think Primary and High Schools ought to be placed under one management, and that money given for Secondary Education should be divided into Scholarships, so as to render it accessible to clever children of the poor. lam opposed to raising the school age. 4—l am very much opposed to Immigration. 5.—1 am in favor of Retrenchment as far as possible. 6.—1 am not in favor of cutting down the wages of Civil Servants whose Salaries are less than £250 a year. 7.—1 am opposed to further borrowing, b 7.—1 am not in favor of increasing the Customs Duties except in a direction which will assist in developing our own resources and in promoting employment for the people. B.*—l in favto of the leases of the auction.
9.—1 am in favor of the Land Acquisition Bill, and Land Settlement in every possible manner. 10.—I am in favor of Cheap Railway!. 11.—I am in favor of Cheap Money, and Sir Julius Yogel said at Ashburton he had a Bill prepared on that subject. Will you trust me to support it, or will you elect a money-lender who has told you plainly he will oppose it ? 11.—I believe in the present Property Tax exemption of £SOO, and shall resist any proposal to 'lower it. If increased taxation is necessary, I shall vote in favor of the burden being placed on the shoulders of those best able to bear it. I beg you will not be misled by side issues. This is the most important election that has ever taken place in J New Zealand. The Colony is in a very critical condition, and it can be saved only by the greatest care. The Continuous Ministry destroyed it, and if they get back into office they will lead us into bankruptcy. The present Government has hushed the cry of the unemployed, and has done all it was possible for them to do. Mark how all the rich men are opposed to them. Why is this? Because they have brought forward a Graduated Property Tax, and a Land Acquisition Bill. Will you vote for the Government who has been trying to do you good ? Will you vote for Land Settlement ? Will you vote for Liberal Laws and a Liberal Government? Remember the ballot is secret. No man will find out how you voted. The papers will be Bent to Wellington and burned. BEWARE OF LIES! I am, Gentlemen, Tour obedient Servant, J. M. TWOMEY.
