A QUESTION.
TO THE EDITOR. Sie, —Could you inform me who Scohie Mackenzie is. I see that his sneech is the latest addition to the literature Mr Ehodes is circulating to help him in gulling the people in vote for him. By kindly letting me know through the columns of your paper who he is you will oblige.— I am, etc., ‘ ' Inqttieib. [Mr Scohie Mackenzie is a squatter, and Mr Ehodes has no connection with squatters. They only help him to get into Parliament, and then he will turn round and vote against them in the interest of working men. He is the son-in-law of Sir P. D. Bell,
the Agent-G-eneral, who sent the tele- • gram from London a fortnight ago to ; damage Sir Eobert Stout, who says it was untrue. He is also the member who said in Parliament “ keep the Ministry in and their measures out.” He supported the Ministry while buying the District Railways and negotiating the West Coast Railway. He supported them while they wer.i doing wrong, and has turned to abuse them when they propose to do right. The Dunedin Herald says that in addition tobeinga “squatter” he is running in the interest of the Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, but he indignantly denies it. He said in his speech that it cost £70,000 to settle 1000 people on the land, but as the
return submitted to Parliament shows it cost only £3OOO his statements might as well be placed on a par with Lady Vogel’s curtains. Mr Mackenzie is a very angry squatter, who does not mind stretching a point when taking care of his own interests, and the interests of squatters and money-rings. —The Editor.]
