Fire at a Mill. A fire broke out yesterday in the kiln of Bruce’s Oatmeal Mill, Timaru, and damage to the extent of £SO was done before it was suppressed. It appears that while some oats were passing through the kiln, the machinery had to be stopped while soma alterations in the bearings were made, the consequence being that the oats became overheated and took fire, it was fortunate that there was a plentiful supply of water at hand, and that the Fire Brigade was quickly in attendance, otherwise there is little doubt but that the Mill would have been destroyed. Operations weas commenced in tin* mill only last week.
Land Salb. —At the land sale held at the Tomuka Courthouse yesterday by Mr J. E. Baker Commissioner of Crown Lands, there was large attendance. The several sections in Arowhenaa were readily disposed of, only a few, however, exceeding the upset price. For forfeited sections in Belfield district the areas of which were about eight acres, the bidding was most keen. Section 49 fetched £122, or at the rate of about £ls an acre, section 48 realised £ll3, or about £l6 an acre, considerably more than double the upset price. Section 61 found a purchaser at £ll2, just double the upset price. The land where these lots are situated is some of the best in the district, crops of wheat yielding 59 bushels to the acre having been grown there. An important change has been made in the regulations with regard to these secsectioos since the last land sale. Persons who already own one section are entitled to purchase and occupy another.
