NATIVE ELECTION.

The election of a member to represent the Southern Maori Electorate took place yesterday. One of the polling places was the Courthouse, Temuka, which in consequence presented quite a busy scene for a considerable portion of the day. The greatest interest was evinced in the election, and several of the candidates found active partisans, Every available vote was recorded, and old John Kahn, whose years are nid to considerably exceed a hundred, iatisted on being brought over to record his vote. For this purpose a dray was procured, and, swathed in blankets, the old politician came bold'y to the poll. Although of such advanced years, bis intellect appeared to be but slightly impaired, and, though unable to move without assistance, he had little difficulty in going through the neoesiary forms provided for recording his vote. The following is the result of the election as far as Temuka is concerned i— , Hone Tare Tikao 15 Tare Wetere-te-Kahu 10 TameParata 2 Raniera Erebana 0 Mr Ormond addresed a vary large meeting at Napier on Tuesday evening. At the close of the address a vote of thanks and confidence was declared by the Mayor, who presided, to be carried,bat this was challenged by the oppositionists. The meeting terminated with cheers for Ormond and counter cheers for Ivess. Sir Julius Vogel was aeeorded a unanimous vote of thanks for an addreis at Papmui on Tuesday night.
