Melbourne, Aug. 30. Thomas Dakin, the contractor who was summoned by the Chief Justice for contempt of Court in refusing to stop his workmen making a noise to the annoyance of the Court, has been fined £l. The following New Zealand horses remain in the Caufield Cup :—-Trenton, Pasha, Niagara, Spade Guinea, aud Mitrailleuse. Sydney, Aug. 29. Wadham Dalwood, a squatter near Invere 1, murdered his wife and three children. He committed the act while in i fat of religious insanity. Aug. 30. The general meeting of the Mutual Life Association of Australasia was held to-day. The report for tho past financial year showed that the invested funds of the Association amount to £530,000, and the annual ineome to £153,600. Messrs Humphrey and Davies, the retiring directors, were re-elected.
The Government offer a reward of £25,000 for an effectual remedy for the rabbit pest, Brisbane, Aug. 39. It is annouueed that Mr Dutton, Minister of Public Lands, has been appointed Minister of Public Works and Mines, vacant by the death of Mr Miles. It is at present uncertain whether the Colonial Treasurership, vacant by the resignation of Mr Dickson, will be filled. In the Legislative Assembly tcrday, the Premier, notifying ths House of the vacant seats in the Cabinet, said that the majority in Parliament were against tho land proposals of the Government, but at the same time members affirmed that the Ministry should remain in office though it was an anomaly for a Ministry to be called upon tp retain the confidence of a House which was unwilling to give effect to its policy. The Government, he said, would not press forward its land proposals this session. The leader of the Opposition approyad qf the appeal to the country, which the Premier declared the Government would accept, Amongst tho Premier's forecast for the session he announoed a Bill for the administration of New Guinea to be proceeded with as soon as word was received from the New South Wales as to whether it adhered to its previous formal assent,
