LECTURE.

The Rev. T. B. Jones, of the Primitive Methodist Church, Timaru, delivered a lecture in the Wesleyan Church, Tamuka, last evening. There was a fair attendance, and the chair was occupied by the Rev. Mr Thomas, who briefly introduced the lecturer. The rev. lecturer commenced by giving an account of the present condition of Wales. It had, he said, C2 newspapers and 22 periodicals. England, with a population 14 times as large, had only 13 times as many newspapers, and hardly seven times as many periodicals. Ireland, with four times the population, had only a little more than twice the number of newspapers—l4B to Wales’ 62. In periodicals she stands at the top of the ladder. In proportion to population Wales has twice as many as England, half as many as Scotland, and four times as many as Ireland. He next spoke of Welsh hwyl , which means power of the Spirit resting richly upon the preacher, also Welsh fire. He said he had heard much about Welsh fire since he came to Timaru, but the fire which burned so brightly in Ho pulpit of Wales for the last 150 years was the fire of God, and all Welsh preachers were all aflame with it. He then gave a graphic sketch of t' e life of Christmas Evans, the great Welsh preacher, and spoke for about two hours, illustrating Ida discourse with amusing anecdotss. At the c'opo of the lecture Mr Rees Thomas, moved, »nd Mr Miles seconded, a vots of thanks to Mr Jones for his able address, and it was carried by acclamation.
