Maori whalers at The Brothers on Monday caught n whale 92 feet long, of the estimated value of £4OO. Mr W. 11. Ejes, Deputy Regis'rar of the Supreme Court, Christchurch, died on Wednesday. The Otago Land Board was engaged on Wednesday in an enquiry into the validity of a declaration made by Janies Patterson, the purchaser of a perpetual lease section St Chatton. A man named Ballantine had surrendered his section, ns he found the rent too high, and then tendered again for it. Patterson also tendered, and it was now objected that Patterson, with his brother, had a joint interest in a section containing 600 acres, and his application was invalid. After taking evidence the decision was adjourned. A country settler named Walter Henderson was drowned on Wednesday morning, while crossing the Hedgchope at Miller’s Ford, Southland. Ho was accompanied at the time by two brothers and a sister. The body was recovered. The Supreme Court sittings were opened at.B'enbeim on Wednesday by Mr Justice Richmond. Only three cases were in the calendar. Martin Elliott got 12 months for stealing sheepskins ; Win. Turnbull, 2 years and 2j lashes for attempted rape on a farmer’s daughter on the high road. On Thursday, Thos, H. Warren, 41, was charged with criminally assaulting his own daughter, aged 14 last birthday. The evidence was similar to what was given at the Resident Magistrate’s Court. The daughter’s evidence and that of her sister did not waver in the least. The prisoner again asserted his innocence iof the atrocious charge. The judge summed up in a clear and lucid fashion explaining the law points. After three quarters of an hour, the jury returned a verdict of not guilty. The p.s. Tongariro, a vessel about SO tens, quite recently bought to run between Napier and Mohnkn, went ashore atjj trvo o’clock on Wednesday morning about a mile north of the Mnhaka river, and is expected to become a total wreck, the latest report being that she is breaking up. She was partly owned by Mr Puck and the captain. No loss of life occurred. The s.s. Fairy had great difficulty in weathering the gale, but managed to make the port safely. A man named Geo-go Henry Adams 1 was charged at the Auckland Police Court on Thursday with presenting a valueless cheque for £4O, drawn on the Bank of NewZ'aland, Ho had taken a passage by the Hawera for the south, and by the Kaikoura for London, under the name of Wallace, but was arrested before leaving Auckland, The case was lernanded. Twenly-thvee pictures, presented .by Sir George Grey to the Art Gallery, have arrived at Auckland from Kawau. The list inc’udes a “Holy Family,” by Raphael, “ Holy Family ” by Reynolds, and works by Murillo, Wilkie, ilid others. A si aide owned by Mr Drornogge, at Mount Eden, was burnt early on Thursday morning. The building was discovered on fire earlier in the night, and the fire had then been extinguished. Incendiarism is suspected. A great fire occurred at Eden Terrace, Auckland, on Thursday morning, causing a loss of over £6OOO, It broke out at 12.30 n.m. in a small house occupied by Mr Llewellyn, near the riding school, and fanned by a south-east grle extended and spread cross the street, and destroyed Mr Sandal I’s two-storey block, and Mr Hill’s large two-slorey block. The fire next spread to the adjoining side streets, and before being checked tweniy dwellings and six shops were burned down. The flames raged fiercely for over two hours, and swept an area of four acres square on which wooden buildings were closely built. Thre i attempts had been made to enure an incendiary fire in the block on previous occasions.
