London, Aug, 23. Rear-Admiral Heoeage succeeds RearAdmiral Seymour in command of ihc Pacific squadron. Sir Graham Berry has asked Mr Goschen, Chancellor of the Exchequer, whether the English Government will contribute £SOOO towards defraying the cost of an Antarctic exploring expedition, provided that a similar amount is contributed by the Australian colonies. A telegram from Merv reports that news has reached there from Afghanistan that the Ameer has had his foot amputated, owing to gangrene, and that his life is endangered. Pauper emigrants who left for the United States were not allowed to land, and they have returned to England. The Canadian Government have refused to receive in that country boys convicted of offences committed in London, The Premier of Canada threatens to apply for a force of British regulars to prevent the completion of the railway connection between the Manitoba railways and the American railway system. A deputation of members of the House of Commons will visit the United States in October to present a memorial to the House of Congress in favor of a treaty for the settlement of disputes by arbitration. Messrs Kains and Jackson estimate the English wheat crop at over 31 bushels to the acre. Several others place the average higher. The barley yield is slightly, ami the oat crop considerably, under the average. Aug, 24. Sir John Macdonald, Premier of Canada, states that a strong British garrison will shortly be stationed at Winnipeg, the capital of Manitoba. Two hundred members of the House of Commons hare signed the memorial to President Cleveland urging that the difficult disputes between England and America should bo referred to arbitration. The frozen mutton by the Iberia is realising 3£d ; best Canterbury more, The market is depressed. A large proportion of the oranges by the Iberia are unsound, and are fetching only nominal prices. A loan is being floated in Berlin for the Argentine Republic. Aug. 25. The report to hand yesterday from Afghanistan, via Forr, of the Ameer’s illness, is proved to be unfounded. Several disturbances took place at Ostend on Tuesday and yesterday, a number of English fishing smacks being attacked by the local fishermen. The gendarmes and civil artillery were called out, and fired upon the latter, several of whom were killed and wounded. The team of erh keters organised by Vernon, which is about to visit Australia, will be composed as follows : Hawke, Newton, O’Brien, Read, StoJdart, Abel, Attwell, Bates, Beaumont, and Peel.
