THE ELECTION.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib,—Knowing you are a friend of the weaker party, can I trouble you for a little •pace to answer Fairplsy, When ! spoke of the Government I. did not mean the present Government, for I know there has been a deal of pressure brought to bear on them by the squatters, and now the squatters want the country to elect men to extend their leases, and to put the country to more expense. I think the same as you do, Mr Editor, that wo should have more people settled on the land; more to pay property tax; more to contribute to the revenue; more to employ labor; more to consume our flour $ more to buy out cows and horses ; more to help our tradesmen, by buying boots and clothing, etc. You know those squatter gentlemen pay very little property tax for Crown lands. Let me point out to nay brother electors how they are imposed upon, and that now is their time to get shat of those drones, and to elect good Liberal men, who will put a stop to this sort of thing and save the country from ruin, There is plenty of pastoral land, and there will be plenty of people got to take it up and help to pay off the present debt. There are good formed roads at present along the foot of the hills, and all the blocks of land oonld take their frontage on these roads. The people could settle on these blocks; they could make good fruit gardens, grow their own potatoes, kill their own mutton and their own bacon, make their own butter and cheese, and in fact produce almost everything they require except flour. Mr Editor, would you be kind enough to let the Liberal papers know how the country is shut np from settlement by being held in large areas ?—I am, eto., JFarmebs Geraldine, August 24th, 1887.
