TO THE ELECTORS OF GLADSTONE. VJT ,hat » having been ASKED by the POLITICAL REFORM ASSOCIATION to WITHDRAW from CONTESTING the GLADSTONE SEAT in Parliament attho forthcoming Election, with reluctance I am willing to CONSENT to their request. It is the opinion of th« Association that as they have selected their Candidate I am too late in the field. I should have preferred seeing a farmer resident iu the district representing us. This proves to me that the RULES OF THE ASSOCIATION ARE WRONG IN PRINCIPLE. It is my opinion that the Electors should never be asked to pledge their voles to any Candidate ; that it is contrary to Liberal principles and Freetrade to ask a man to pledge bis vote: it simply entirely destroys the effect of the Ballot and the liberties of the British subject. Every man should be Free on the Polling Day to Vote for the Candidate he considers the beat man. However, I trast that the result of the Election will prove all for the best. At one Public Meeting I was accused of only doing a little 1 beg to state that I have never been guilty of political dodging, or any other shabby trick. By retiring I relieve »y fellow Electors from the trouble of attending my Meetings to explain my views and all unnecessary expense. It is difficult to say which ot the Candidates would hav« been moßt effected had I contested the Election. Had.l proved to be the favorite, it would certainly have had the same effect on each unsuccessful Canditate. If at a future time I am required, my services will be at your disposal. Thanking the Electors who volunteered to support me, Believe me, yours very truly, WM. UPTON SLACK. Woodside, Geraldine, August I|, 1887.

TO THE ELECTORS OF GLADSTONE. " ENTLEMEN,—I beg respectfully to X inform you that at the forthcoming Election I shall offer myself as a Candidate for the representation of your Electoral District in Parliament, and will take an early opportunity of delivering ad» dresses in all centres of population. Until you have heard my views on the National Bank, Retrenchment, and other Radical Reforms, I trust you will not pledge yourselves to any other candidate. I am, Gentlemen, Your obedient Servant, J. M. TWOMBY.
