The glove fight to a finish between Murphy, the light weight champion, and K Burgess, a local man, for £SO and pate money, took place at Auckland on Monday evening. The fight was very even until the fourth round, when Murphy caught Burgess a blow on the chin which knocked him out of time. Detective Herbert, who waa sent to bring to Auckland the solicitor Forwood for larceny as a bailee, returned from Melbourne on Tuesday. It appears that the journey to Auckland at the present season of the year, inForwoud's state of health, would prove hazardous, if not fatal. The case is thus at a standstill till his health permiti of the voyage. Three other arrests have been made in connection with the recent jewellery robbery at Auckland. James and Alfred Clune, brothers of George Clune, have been secured, and charged with being concerned in the affair. At a meeting of the Charitable Aid Hoard at Christchurch on Wednesday hfternoOD, a deputation consisting of Mr Hulbert and Captain Garcia waited on the board with reference to a memorial home and requested them to take over the money, about £I6OO, which has been collected by the Jubilee committee and apply to Government for a subsidy and carry out the building in accordance with tbo wishes of the subscribers. The board accepted the money with thanks, and decided to endoavour to meet their wishes as fully as possible. At the inquest on the girl Larsen, who threw herself from the Waimakariri bridge, it was proved that she bad been lowspirited for some time and that insanity was hereditary in the family. A verdict of suicide while temporarily insane was returned.

Court on Thursday morning on a charge of assault vriik intent to commit rape on a young girl sixteen years of age.- After the girl had identified accused he was remanded till Saturday. At Dunedin on Thursday William Agnew, who has been persistently interfering with members of Parliament, was bound over to keep the peace for twelve months for using provoking language to Mr Dennialoun, solicitor. William Counsel has been arrested in Sydney, under the Destitute Persona Amendment Act, for the desertion of his wfe and family at Dunedin. Constable Cruickshanks has been sent over to bring feim back.
A demonstration in favour of the pro* hibitioo of the liquor trutßc was held aX Dunedin on Thursday evening by the total abstinence bodies and Salvation Army. The weathtr militated againet a large attendance outside, bnt in the barracks a number of speeches were delivered. It was announced that the following candidates had returned answer!? favorabiu to the Alliance programme : —Messrs A. H. Rosa, 0. i. Hodge, Gore, Dick, Chapman, and Sir Robert Stout.
Sir Julius Vogel and Mr Larnacb, in reply to deputations, sympathised with the objects of the N.Z. Allinoce. Mr Larnacb said no compensation should be allowed if the existing licenses were cancelled. Under the prenent law they must give compensation. The people at the ballot-box ought to have the right to declare whether or not the liquor traffic in their districts should cease.
