At Dunedin yesterday, in the cose of Sargood and Co. v. the Corporation, judgment was given for the defendants with costs, His Honor Mr Justice Williams holding that the damage done to plaintiffs stock in their cellar was to an excessive fall of rain on the night in question, and to no fault of the Corporation. At Wangaoui the other night the Hon. Mr Balance took occasion to deny ihe reports circulated by the Opposition as to Ministerial disloyalty. W. R. Waters wus arrested at We,UmgC ton yesterday charged Jfrfcfi"""e"iiabezzling £IOO. At the Supreme Court, Auckland, on Wednesday, in Banco, Mr Richards, a publican, residing at the Thames, appealed against a recent decision of the R.M.. there, appellant being convicted of keeping his house open during prohibited hours, namely, after one o'clock in the morning, as, although ic was shown that the house was actually closed, people who were inside were being served with drink. The appeal was for the purpose of upsetting that conviction. Mrßiiime, for appellant, argued that the house 3ould be said to be open when the entrances were closed. His Honor Justice Ward agreed with him in this view and quashed the conviction, pointing out, however, that the': penalty could have been imposed for selling liquor during prohibited hours and the information in this case had been wrongfully laid. Charles A. Rogers, vho was arrested last week at Lyttelton for forgery, waß J charged at the New Plymouth Polioe r Court yesterday and committed for trial. The Wellington Corporation, and other bodies interested, intend to urge Government to reinstate the clock when the Post Office is rebuilt. Part of the funds were originally supplied to Government by the public bodies, and as the clock w*s not insured it is considered that the Government are responsible for its loss. Hubert's dwelling, near Tapanui, Otago, has been burned down. loiurad for £3OO in the Standard.
