McLeod.

Tie Point Boad.—The road from Arowhenua to Pleasant Point is at present in a very bad condition. Farmers and other, who hare occasion to use the road complain bitterly that the needful repairs required are not done. There are several dangerous ruts in the metalled portion of the road and the unformed section is very much out up. It would perhaps be well for the resident ■ if they were to take steps at the next Boad Board to nominate one of their number who would look after their interests. A Lsssorr. Mr Franks might very well take a lesson from the way in which he has been tieatcid by the papers, He has hitherto done all his printing and advertising in Titnaru, ho has only given this paper the “ enormous ” sum of 8s to recoup the expense of giving publicity to his views. Yat although he has been advertising in the Timaru Herald that paper did not think it worth while bo send a reporter to his meeting. The Herald is behaving very impartially in these elections.

MR Brtce’s Omiow. —Speaking at Wnverley last week, Mr Bryce indicated that ho did not expect to be in the next Ministry, not being in the least ambitious for the honor; but whatever party he wosio, they would have to go in for retrenchment such ss had never yot been experienced in the colony. It was either that or repudiation—a dishonor the colony would not think of incurring. He ridiculed the idea of candidates without any Parliamentary experience talking of the ease with which hundreds of thousands of pounds could be saved. He said that any Ministry that undertook the duty would have to pass through purgatory before the result was obtained. There must be much labour and much worry. Newspaper Mek.—lt is a remarkable fact that marly all the newspaper men at present in the field ss candidates for Parliament are true ond sincere followers of Sir Robert S'out. If newspaper men got tbeir due, they would occupy a first place in the ranks of those who have done most for the advancement of civilisation, for righting wrongs, for spreading knowledge, for improving the condition of the people, and for advancing the cause of suffering humanity generally. Who has done so much for exposing the miseries of London life as Mr Sim f Who has mads such a sacrifice as Mr Stead, who risked his reputation, his liberty, his all, and was sent to gaol as a common felon for the sake of the people ? There were five newspaper men in the last Parliament, and Mr Wakrfield was the only one of them who vo‘ed on the Atkinson ticket. We all know Mr Wakefi-ld and what be is. Woodbury Scho®l Committee. The mon'hly 'meeting of this Committee was held on Monday evening last. Present —Messrs J. H. Dean (Chairman), Hammond, Gick, and Hratley. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence was read from the B.C. Board of Education in answer to the Chair-nan’s letter re the Fairfield or Rhubarb F’ot School, stating that no further steps are to be taken in that direction until the matter has been further reported upon by the Board’s Inspector. The letter was acknowledged. From the same intimating that the incidentals for the present quarter had been placed to the Committee’s credit in the Bank of New Zea land, Geraldine. It was resolved that as Mrs Evans’ term of office expired on the 31st inst. tenders be called for the office of janitor. The tenders to be sent to the Chairman not later than the Slit inst. Accounts to the am >unt of £1 Is 3d were paaopd pay men 1 , and the meeting terminated.

A»eWHBSDA Town Boabd.—A special meeting of the Arowhenua Town Board was held on Saturday, August 6. Present Messrs Lee (Chairman), Story, and Edgeler. Mr Baker, Crown Lands Commissioner, met the Board and stated that a petition had been presented to the Minister of Lands, praying that the reserve round the creek should not be altered from the original survey. Ho intimated that the matter was entirely in the hands of the Board, but stated that if altered the Board would lose about £2OO, that being the third share that would accrue to the Board if the land was sold. After a long discussion it was resolved —"That the land adjoining the creek running through the township and village settlement be left as originally surveyed, and made a reserve for a public garden,” The meeting then terminated.
