GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Council was held yesterday. Present Messrs John Talbot, (chairman), Wm. Moody, W, M. Moore, B. Maokay, and B. A. Barker. In his opening statement the chairman said there had been some delay about the proclamation, and the Council’s solicitors had been requested to ask the company to allow the work to proceed pending the issue. The company had thereupon telegraphed to Go vernment asking that the proclamation should bo suspended until their claim lor certain compensation had been considered. The request had been acceded to and the matter was now hung up, and would probably remain so till next summer,—lt was resolved to telegraph to the Minister of Public Works, urging immediate action as to the possession of the land, as delor would involve the loss of a session, and adding that compensation was amply provided for by existing l Acts. Messrs Moason and Merchant, the Board’s Engineers, presented a report on the Opihi Bridge and the. river -encroachments, and after consideration it was decided to authorise the engineers to carry out their proposals, which include a stone groin, willow planting, etc. A petition was received from Wooibury asking for the proclamation of the district as a water supply area. The Engineers reported favorably, and it was decided to take steps to give effect to the petition. Mr F. B. Flatman wrote, asking that something be done for the protection of the South approach of the Rangitata tnffio bridge which was seriously threatened, and stating that the small contract let by the Ashburton Council was insufficient for the purpose. The Ashburton County Council sent a copy of their engineer’s report on the bridge. This report proposed the erection of a heavy boulder e mbankment across tne gully, a little higher up. The cost would probably-b about £Bs.—lt was decided to agree with the proposals of the Ashburton Council, and to recommend that the boulder work should be wired. Mr Merchant's report on the same matter was also recommeded to the Asburton Council.

Three Rsngitata water-supply tenders were oooned os follows:
