On last Saturday afternoon Mrßuxton had not definitely made up his mind on the subject, and we have not heard from him since. The electors of Rangitata could not select a more capable man. Although the wounds are painful, no vital part* have been injured and no danger is anticipated to the lad. Worth Reading.— ln the Ctago Daily Times of August Ist last, there appeared in a report of a meeting held in Dunedin on the previous Saturday evening the following " Mr J. H. Richardson, the Secretary, was instructed to obtain from MrJ, M. Twomey 2000 copies of his address to the electors of Gladstone on Industrial Development, being a series of articles reprinted from the Temuka Leader, Several speakers spoke in the highest terms of praise of Mr Twomey’s address.” Since then the 2000 copies have been ordered and forwarded to Dunedin, and now the Budget and the Otago Work man, two Dunedsn weekly papers, are republishing the articles m full. From information to hand wa learn they are creating quite a sensation there. Three years ago Mr Twomey brought out the scheme of a Rational Bank and cheap money to farmers, and it went like wildfire through the whole length of the colony. Now bis articles on Industrial Development are attracting attention.

Looad Industry. —Mr T. Bowkett, coaohbuildor, of Geraldine, has just cotfapleted to tha order of Mr R. H. Pearpomt a draper’s travelling van that for workmanship compares favorably with anything of the class produced in city workshops, while for convenience it surpasses anything travelling ia the district. Outwardly the van has the same appearance as an ordinary one. Instead, however, of the sides and back being simply oilcloth or leather they are composed of wood, and fitted with a number of shelves and drawers of various sizes for holding goods. A shutter swung from the top with hinges can be lifted on either side and at the back, and allows the whole stock to be displayed as in a shop. The shutters bring propped with an iron rod forms a miniature verandah, and allows of business being done even in wet weather. A space of about eighteen inches wide is loft vacant inside the trap which can be utilised for carrying feed or any other requisite. Altogether the van is a most convenient one, and the design and workmanship, both of which are Mr Bowkott’s, reflect groat credit on that gentleman. Protection Association.— U the weekly meeting of the Christchurch Protection Association on August 2nd, after the ordinary business was gone through, it. wae agreed that the following questions be put to candidates for Parliament Are you in favor of a customs tariff sufficient to enable local industries to compete with long hours, cheap labor, and the low rate of interest on capital of foreign countries ? Are you in favor of a remission of duties on goods that cannot be made or produced in the colony ? Are you in favor of raising the revenue by the means of a land and income tax f Are you in favor of a State Bank of Issue? It was decided that the above questions be forwarded to kindred Associations. The President and Vice-President were appointed as a deputation to wait on several candidates to ascertain to what extent they agree with the planks of the protection platform. The meetiag also discussed the following extract, which is interesting te farmers and others at the coming elections, viz.“ A New York paper, the Tribune, made a direct appeal to the farmers recently, in order to ascertain their opinion on the merits of protection : as to whether they considered it bensfleial to themselres, One month was allowed for replies, and in the time 2554 votes were sent in. The voting was as follows i—For,protection, 2351; indifferent or undecided, 114; freetraders, 89.” The result was consequently an overwhelming majority of the farmers favoring protection.
