GERALDINE PARK.
TO THE EEITOR. Sir, —I noticed in your paper a week or two ago a letter calling attention to the state of the G-eraldine Park, and asserting that it resembled a stockyard more than a pleasure ground. I happened to be one of those who repaired to the Park in question to witness the late match, between the Temuka and Geraldine Football teams, and I can fully bear out all that your correspondent said. The lessee of the Park had allowed both, cattle and horses into the " oval," and it was in a terrible state of manure aDd mud. The footballers had gathered a good deal of the former off. of the spot devoted to football and it was somewhat cleaner than the other portion, but the heaps of manure lying about were enough to show anyone what it had been. Then, too, the gate leading in to the oval had been used to take the cattle in and out, and all around it was a really hopeless sea of mud and filth. The pavilion, too, had been, used to store hay in, and the state of the ground whera the cattle had been feeding is better imagined than deI scribed. It is to be hoped that the Domain Board will take some steps to prevent this Park being destroyed for public games, as the state of the ground at present is such as to severely handicap all manly outdoor sports being played in the park.—l am, etc. Spectator. Temuka, August Ist, 1887.
