S.C. BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The monthly meeting of this Board took place on Thursday. Present— Messrs W. S. Goldsmith, (Chairman), M. Gray, W. B. Howell, J. Talbot, ft. A, Barker, Bers. J. Smythe and G. Barclay. "',',. Id bio opening statement the Chair* man said Mr Bannerman had been appointed locum teneng to the Hook, Miss Mecsies to Gapes' Valley, and Miss Callender to Totsra Valley. A telegram was read from the Government stating that they intended proposing a rote of £350 to replace the Winchester school building md furniture.—After some discussion the following resolution, moved by the Rev. G. Barclay, and seconded by the Rev. Jasper Smythe, was carried—" That the Board, while.thanking the Government for the offer of £250 towards the replacing of the Winchester School buildings, beg to point out that the sum is too small, by at least £200; that they cannot replace the school, also the school furniture, maps, desks, etc,, which are valued at £IOO, for the sum proposed by the Government, and that the Government be asked to supplement their offer by £200." The report of the Inspector re the burning of .the Winchester School was then read. After some consideration it was resolved—" That the Board regret ths loss of the Winchester school by fire; jdso, that so far as is known at present "Wtht evidence in regard to the circumstances of the fire is not such as to make it clear that the matter was accidental." The Secretary was instructed to forward a copy of these resolutions to the Winchester School Committee, and to the Government. A letter was read from the Winchester School Committee about & room in which to teach the children until a school is built. After soma discussion the matter was loft in the hands of the Chairman to do what he thought most advisable. Several and letters were also read re a new site for the new buildings. The Architect's report was read and approved, The Inspector's remarks on the pupil teachers' examination was read. It stated that all the pupil teachers in the Board's service, 6 males and 13 females, presented themselves, and twenty candidates not yet holding appointments, took part in the examination, but as one of the candidates for the first year absented himself from most of the work the number was reduced to nineteen. Of the thirty-seven pupil teaohers only four failed, two being of the fourth year, one of the third, and one of the first. Of the nineteen candidates seven were unsuccessful, the failures being confined to those trying the first year examination, The following ara tabulated results:— TOUBXHTMB. Place of ,j *|

Barclay, the secretary rec'eiveJ instructions ’to write to certain (School Committees about some of the pupil teachers who bad been lately examined, . The regulations of pupil teachers pfirere then considered, and it was resolved k! on llte motion of the Rev. G. Barclay, seconded by Mr Barker-—“ That a committee be appointed to consider and report on clause 6 in Gazette No, 43 bearing upon pupil teachers, such committee to consist of the iti'V. J. bmylbe, Mr Gray, and the mover, and to consult with the inspector.”

The report of th« committee to consider amendments to the Pupil Teachers Regulations was then read, and it was resolved—" 'J'nat the report of the committee re pupil teachers as now submitted be adopted."

It w»s resolved to declare North Beaconsfield a school district.

Dr Foster wrote resigning his sent, which was accepted with regret, and the secretary was instructed to take the necessary stepa to fill the vacancy. Acconnts were passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
