Sydney, Aug. 1. Arrived—Steamship Hauroto from Wellington. News is to hand that the missionaryschooner Cairndhu was wrecked at Malo Island, and all on board were saved. Aug. 2. The G-erman squadron, which has been in port for some time past, will shortly leave for Samoa. Melbourne, Aug. 1. The Austrian barque Grange, which went ashore off Point Lonsdale on the 24th ult., ia now breaking up, and has been abandoned to the underwriters. Several Melbourne experts, who have examined the jewels brought to Adelaide, alleged to have been found on the north-east border of South Australia, deny that they are rubies, but consider them garnets. Aug. 2. It is announced that Queensland will not participate officially in the Centennial Exhibition owing to an outbreak of smallpox at Port Darwin.' The vessels therefrom are now subjected to quarantine. The executors of the late Mr S Parkes, who was killed in the Windsor accident, have lodged a claim for £39,000 compensation.
