SIR JOHN HALL AT LEESTON.
£ir John Hall addresf-ed a crowded meeting at Leeston on Saturday night and was accorded a vote of thanks. In the course of his address he claimed that his Government hud been an economical one, a'nd he advocated thorough retrenchment. Fe did not approve of the t'triff proposals
of the Government because they wi&hed
to tax certain articles which cuild not * bear taxation. He believed in moderately protecting Buch industiies a* could, bo profitably pufsited. He ascribed the d»v.j.ression to the low .prices <f produce, want of confidence in th« colony prevailing -.. in oiher countries through our large indebtedoess, and alarm at the wild theories advanced by some pub'io men, aod to the
arge sums sent away annually for interest. The last cause was due mainly to the abuse of the public works policy. What Was needed wai to import less and export more, to piaotice economy in the public service, and t> endeavor to open up new industries, such as the export of dairy produce. Especially muHt the colony practically stop borrowing. A portion of the audience gave cheers for Sir Julius Vogel and Sir .Robert Stout.
