FOOTBALL.

SOUTH CANTERBURY F.O. V. WINCHESTER F.C.

The first fifteen of these clubs mat in a friendly game of football at Winchester, on Thursday last. The day was all that could be desired for football, and a most enjoyable match was played, resulting in a win for the visitors, by 7 points (two ggals and a try) to 3 points (a goal). The Timara team which arrived on the ground at 5.30 p.m., were captained by Wood, and the Winchester men by G, Smith. Messrs Flint and B. Smith acted as umpires for Timara and Winchester, and Mr G. R, George as referee, Winchester kicked off, and worked the ball into the limarn twenty-fives, wh»re some tongh scrimmaging took place. Elliot relieved his aide by an effective punt, and tbe ball being well followed op, it was rushed into the Winchester twenty-fives, when Jones very neatly patted a goal. Harts kicked off again for Winchester, when some good exchanges between Jones and Elliot took place till LeGren getting , hold of tbs leather made a capita] run, carrying the ball into the Winchester twenty-fives when they were soon afterwards forced down. Shortly After, LeOren obtained a try which was converted into a goal by McLean. Winchester again kicked off and some good play was shown by their forward?, who took tha leather into the Timaru twenty-fires, but the Timaru forwards by Some good play soon took it back to the Winchester quarter flag, when Clinch relieved it. Again, however, it was worked forward by Timara, and Winchester was forced down. From the kick oat, tbe ball was again taken into tbe Timara quarters till Lawrenson relieved bis side by a good punt which was ably returned by G. Smith. Loose scrams now took place till Clinch again got bis hands on, and was off in a twinkling, till collared by Jones, well in the Timara ground. Jones then Secured the leather and made a desperate effort to get through, but Harte and Steward, who were playing a splendid game, were too much Time was now called. From the kick off by Timaru, some good scrimmages followed, and the ball being worked Into Tiraaru’s ground they were forced down. Bennet, Stewart, Harte, and Clinch, were now doing splendid work, the latter obtaining a 'mark, for Winchester. Play was now

kept in the centre of the ground, and . some splendid passing was shown by Lawrenson, Elliot, Jones, and McLean, for Timaru. Winchester again worked the ball up, and forced Timaru down. Shortly after the kick out, LeCren made a splendid run for Timaru, Shortly afterwards, Lawrenpon obtained a try for bis side, which McLean failed to convert into a goal. Winchester again showed some good loose play, and compelled Timaru to force down. Shortly after this G, Smith obtained a mark for

Winchester, from which A. Sballard kicked a beautiful goal. Time was then called. The match was played in a most friendly spirit throughout, and both .sides worked hard to score the victory. For Timaru, Lawreison, Jones, McLean and Elliott, were conspicuous, while for Winchester, the Stewarts (3), Harte, Clinch, Bennett, Austin, and Sballard, did splendid work. At the conclusion of the match all those engaged adjourned to the Wolseley Hotel, where a really first-class dinner had been prepared in Mr TonngV best style.
