A man named John Sanderson obtained £7 damages against the Peninsula (Otago), Road Board for injuries to his horse through the Board not keeping the road in order. Mr Waiter Johnston, formerly Minister for Public Works, is a probable candidate for one of the city of Wellington electorates, in the Protection interest. A fourteen-roomed house belonging to Wra. Commons was burned down at Tauranga on Friday night. It was insured for £SOO, and the loss is £250 beyond that. As the Alameda was leaving San Francisco, a woman came on board and shot a steerage passenger named Bishop, who had been in the colonies before. He walked off the ship but fell on the quay and was taken ’to the receiving hospital, where the bullet was extracted from his back. His not known whether the case will result fatally. The woman was not his wife. Daring the hearing of a case of vagrancy at the Dunedin Police Court it was urged in defence that defendant could not be convicted as he was possessed of money, Mr Logan, who was on the Bench, cited a case from California where a man having 500 dollars was convicted. Counsel for prisoner said if that was held to be law Mr Logan could he convicted, as to his knowlege I he had done no work for ten years. The case was dismissed. At the Sydenham barracks on Friday the first “State Wedding” in the district under the auspices of Salvation Army was celebrated, the bridegroom being Captain Thomas Hawkins Lane, of Sydenham, and the bride|Lieutenant Charlotte Tiicklebank, of Palmerston North. The barracks were thronged. The Rev. W. Orchard (Bible Chrialian) performed the ceremony. The bride was attired in the usual blue uniform of the army, with the addition of a white satin eash over her shoulder and a bunch of orange blossoms at her throat, and carried a small bnnquet. She was attended by one bridesmaid dressed in the conventional fashion of ordinary weddings. The bridegroom was in uniform. The ring being placed upon the bride's finger, a volley was fired, and when the couple were declared married by the minister, the volley was several tim°s renewed. A collection was made to defray theexpensea of the newly-married pair to the West Coast, where they are to labor. I
