THE FLOOD ON THE WEST COAST.

Grbvmoutb, July 11. The gas was lighted last night for the first time since the flood. Retailers of coJ cannot accommodate people fast enough, so great is the demand for fires to dry tenements of all kinds. In every direction all sorts of woven goods are banging out' to dry. Sir Julius Vogel has forwarded, on behalf of *he Government, £l5O for the flood relief fund.

A R.'lief Fund meeting was held on Saturday evening, to consider steps to be taken for the assistance of working people who lost their all by tba flood. The Mayor read a ’ist of subscriptions promised. The Council voted £SO that afternoon. No person in any way of business is to receive any assistance. So far nearly £l5O has been raised. A large and influential Committee has been appointed to eolloct and superintend the distribution of the money, the Borough Council and local clergy forming part of it. It was decided ta request the Minister of Marine to order that the south harbor work to be carried out by day labor instead of by contract. There has been a very heavy loss of cattle at Grey Valley,

The tender of J. and A. Anderson, Ohristchiucb, has been accepted for the Lyell bridge contract, the amount being £8957. The highest tender was £13,059. At the request of the Press Association, the Postmaster-General has agreed to extend the limits within which press telegrams can be sent to evening papers, and has so arranged as to have the cable: kept open half an hour later at night. Messrs D. McMillan, J. H. Baker (Commissioner of Crown Lands), 3. E. March (Immigration officer), B, Burnett (Railway Engineer), and F. Withers (Public Works Engineer), have consented to act as a Board of'Advice in connection with the labor bureau at Christchurch.

The ba'anoa sheet of the Corporation of Dunedin for nine months shows that the estimated income in the municipal account will tall short o! liabilites by over £IO,OOO, and that the overdraft will be over the legal limit if the expenditure be not cartailed, The water supply account is also deficient by over £BOOO, but the gas account will be in credit by nearly £4OOO. A man named Samuel Smith, a dyer, who came from Christchurch some time ago, committed suicide at Dunedin oo Monday night by cutticg bis throat. He was of intemperat* habits, and had not long ago taken a knife and inflicted a wound on his wife’s throat. His wife Was away when he committed suicide. At the inquest the verdict was that “ death resulted from hemorrhage from wounds self-inflicted."

For some years past a xmn named Samuel Barker has been receiving relief from the Benevolent Institution, Dunedin. Information reached the Trustees that the man had money, and intended to draw some from the Savings Bank. On Tubs day the Chau man and Secretary attended at the counter and confronted the man who was about to draw £B6 19s ii, hie allowed Chairman to deduct £3O 10s fr 0,19 sum to avoid further proceed-
