Tm» Corn Exchange reports for the week ending Friday evening, the tith insf. : Farming operations have been a good deal delayed through the inclemency of the weather. The majority of the farmers, however, are well advanced with their work. There has been a fair demand for prime seed wheat, for which full rates hive been obtained. Wheat—Large stocks are still held in store, and holders are rather more anxious to do business. This, however, is cifficu't m the absence of outside orders. In the absence of large sales during the week wo are disinclined to vary our quotations of last week, viz., 3s 7d for pearl and tnsonn and 3s 6d for hunters. Whole chicken wheat is very scarce and readily commands 3s 3d to 3s 4d ; broken is also scarce at 3s to 3s 2d. Oats—A fair trade has been done daring the week at our last quotations, bright and heavy sorts being in best demand. JDuus have also sold satisfactorily to vendors. Barley— The market is very bare of everything approaching prime malting. Any odd line placed on the market is quickly taken at 4a to 4s 3d. Second quality commands 3s 9d to 3s lOd, but iufeiior is hard to quit at over 3s. Feed is saleable at 2s 3d in small lots. Beans are but lightly held. Owners want 3s 3d. Peas—Blues are very dull at 3s 3d, and feed find local consumption as pig feed at 2s 8d to 2s lOd. Brass Seed—Ryegrass has made no more as yet, and last week’s quotations cannot be altered. Cocksfoot, however, has had a very brisk week. Several lines have changed bauds at 3|d to 4jd for farmers’ parcels, and up to 4|d for machine-dressed lines. Potatoes—Sydney advices are still egaiuat any chance of our local market improving. Several small lines have changed hands at 22s 6d at country stations. Dairy Produce—Butter is in good demand at 7d to 7Jd for prime tub, newly made. Cheese is very quiet at 3d to 4d. The above quotations are for delivery, f.o. b., Lyttelton, sacks extra.
CHRISTCHURCH STOCK MARKETS.
At the Addington yards on Wednesday, there was, notwithstanding bad weather, entries of stock in numbers something above the average, the quality of the fat stock being principally excellent. The attendance of buyers and others was large. Cattle—Fat : A larger entry of fat cattle was yarded than has been seen for many a day, the quality being on the whole much above the average. The demand showed a little improvement, and even in face of the large supply values slightly advanced. Some excellent lines of bullocks were offered and sold at from £5 2s 6d to £8 ; for steers ind for heifers and fat cows from £4 to £6 7s 6d per head, being from 16s to 18s per 1001 b as per quality. In store and dairy cattle next to no demand was shown or sales made.
Sheep—Fat: A good entry of fat sheep came to hand both in point of numbers and quality. The sale opened well, the demand coming from both local and export buyers, and any lots that were capable of improvement were taken for turnips, values advancing about Is per bead all round. The primest of the crossbred wethers sold at from lls to 14s fid and 15s 9d per head; maiden ewes and wethers from 9s fid to lls ; and in one or two cases maiden ewes fetched 14a to 14s 9d per head ; lighter weight crossbreds fetched from 8s fid to 10a per head; ewes, mixed ages, 7s fid to 8s fid ; and merino wethers, of which class very few were yoded, up to fis 9d per bead, being from l£d to 2jd per lb, according to quality. Store* ; A gooA number of store sheep were yarded, for which the demand still ’continues firm, all lines selling at quite laie values. A line of 2-to th ewes and wethers, mixed, sold for 6s sd; another lot of mixed ewes 5a 9d ; a line ewes in lamb, young sbee, fetched 7s ; a line of good at fis, and a line of not very good lambs a 3s 31. Pigs—A very large eotry was yarded, principally baconers. Following on the late heavy supplies the demand was somewhat weaker, and buyers bad it more their own way than of late, values giving way at least |d per lb. Baconers sold at from 3(L to 46s per head ; porkers from Ifis to 225, being from 2£d to 3d per lb, according to weight; stores still very dull of sale.
DUNEDIN PRODUCE MARKETS.
The following is the report for the | week ending Wednesday .• — Wl ie:i t_This market is practically in the same slate as last week. Fowl wheat is rather more plentiful and easier in price. Discolored and danish have met with a better sale at rather advanced values. Milling, Is B|d to Js sci ; extra tine, to la 10d ; bright’stout feed, Is to Is B,d ; medium, le 7d ; inferior, Is fid. Barley—The market h quite bam of malting j milling and feed are also scarce. M ilting, 3a 7d to 4a, ex'rk a shade more ; milling, 3s 4d to 3a 6d ; feed, 3s 9d to 3s 3d.
Cnaff— Sound, well-cut oaten sheaf chaff, 50s; medium, 42s QJ to 47« fid ; (nf- ?ior, 35s to 40ls, Pot'toes—The market is still fully stocked vyith supplies, principally from the south, These sell at 25s to 30s ; while fine northerns are worth 40s.
Grass Seed— Tliere is no inquiry for rye grass, but cocksfoot is somewhat scarce at 4sd to 4|d per lamb. Turnips are plentiful at Jss J carrots, §ss extra),
Butter—Fresh, in mixed cases, I t 8d ; suit, to 7d. Eggs—la 6d per doz.
Sheepskius—On Monday green cross breds sold at 2s 9d to 4a 3d ; green merinos, Is 8d to 2» 7‘l ; diy merinos, 1to 4s Id ; dry crossbreds, 1« 3 I to 4a 41 ; pelt*, 2d to 9J ; lambskif, Is Id to 3? 8d ; skins in bales, 81 to 4| i.
Hides —There ia no change m the local market as regards values, lat« quotations being 3t»aily obtainable.
Tallow—Prime rant ion has been in better request, some large lines having changed hands during the wek ; £l9 10s f.o b. having been paid. Locil y there is a little business doing in medium and mixed qualities, at prices ranging from £l3 to £ls ; with inferior down to £l2. Hough fat is saleable at for clean mutton, 10s to 12a ; mixed, 7s to 9a ; inferior, 3s to 6s per cwt.
DUNEDIN STOCK MARKETS.
At the Burnside Yards on Wednesday the following business was transacted :
Fat Cattle, half were prime, the rest stores to medium quality. Bidding was slack, and excepting for ft specially fine pen or two, prices all round were a shade lower. Bullocks sold at £5 to £8 17a 6d, two making £9 7s 6d ; cows, £3 5s to £6 7s 6d. —Donald Reid and Co. sold for Mr Andrew Grant (Temuka), 7 bullocks at £7 5s ; for Mr William Grari (Elloughton Grange), 7 heifers at £5 17s 8d to £6 17s 6d.—Wright, Stephenson and Co. sold for Mr Win. Grant (EHonghton Grange), 8 prime heifers at £5 to £5 7a 6d.—Reid, Maclean and Co. eo'd for the executors of the late Mr M. Studholme (Waimate estate), 6 prime bullocks at from £7 to £8 ; on account of Mr William Grant (Elloughton Grange, Timarn), 14 very prime heifers at from £5 5a to £6 10s.
Pigs--205 penned.—Wright, Stephenson and Co. sold 124 as follows ; 43 prime bacon pigs at 83s to 645; 43 prime porkers at 26s 6d to 28s ; and 38 extra good slips at 12s to 16s 6d.
AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. Sydney, Ju'v f. The competition at the si ml sheep sales to-day was spirited, prices ranging from 250 guineas guineas per head. Ju'y 7. The total number of »tud sheep so’d at the recent sales was 1950, m-re than half the flock being rams. The amount realised was £20,647. ENGLISH MARKETS. London. July 5. The market for colonial breadstuffs is without quotable change—Ad-lai e wheat, ex store, 355; New Zealand ditto, 34s to 36s ; Adelaide flour, ex store, 24s 6d. Australian tallow Average quality beef, 22s 6d ; mutton, 245. Brandy (Hennessy’s and Martel’s) is quoted at 16s. The wool market remains firm. The catalogue at to-day’s auction comprised 11,500 bales, July 7. At to-day’s wool sales a firm tone again prevailed. One hundred and eleven thousand bales were offered.
The New Zealand Lean and Mercantile Agency Company ( Limited) have received the following cablegram from London, dated sth July, 1887 : Wool—Sines the date of our last telegram the market is unchanged, but the American demand has fallen off slightly. Up to date 24,000 bales have been sold. The sale programme has been by six days.
