THE HON. W, ROLLESTON AT PREBBLETON.

The Han, W. Eollesfon addressed a crowded meeting at Probbleion, North Canterbury, on Tuesday night. He was warra'y received. He defended his action in reference specially to the grain rates and the Midland Railway, contending that his Government had reduced the former on the assurance that the revenue would not suffer thereby He cent'nded that they lasd compulsorily to raise tb'' grain rales again owing to dirainisheo h oome. Willi regard to the Midland Railway be contended that personally be had consistently supported the undertaking. Proceeding to deal with general subjects, he attempted to show that the reductions claimed by the present Government bad no real existence. Mr O’Callaghan, who was most enthusiastically received, made a spiriteu reply, in which he charged Mr Rolleston with .lisingenuousness, and quoted Hansard to prove that Mr Rolleston bad misinterpreted his own action and those of the Government to which lie had belonged. Regarding the Midland Railway Mr O’Oallaghan made a palpable hit by declaring that the coldest shower which bad fallen that evening was not to to be compared in chilling effect to the wet blanket Mr Rolleston had persistently thrown on ttie Midland Rahway enterprise.

At the close of the proceedings Mr Rolleston received a vote of thanks for the address,, three cheers being given for Mr O’Oallaghan. The meeting, though demonstrative, was well-con-ducted. '
