The Overseer laid before the Board a statement of the estimated expenditure necessary at the pound. PETITION. A petition was presented to the Board, signed'by Mr S.E. Graham; and 10 others, requesting the Board 'to have a footbridge erected over the Kakahu river by Russell's. The petitioners uiged that a good number of children have to cross this river to get to school. The bridge was a'po necessary for general traffic. ' The Rev. G. Barclay interviewed the Board in support of the request. He urged the erection of a small bridge ; an expensive one was not required.' The want of > a bridge made ,the attendance irregular, apd lowered the status of the 5ch001,,., He thought, a .bridge, costing aboiii £lO or so would a«swßn|he purpose. The Overseer said it wra.no use putting up a temporary work. There had been a small bridge erected there twice, and it had been washed away each time. He read a report made previously upon this spot, in which he showed that it would cost about £SO to, eiect a bridge that would be of any use in flood time. He was quite certain it they put a bridge up where it waß applied for it would have the effect of turning the river and causing damage. Mr Kelland said it was due to the Board and Mr Barclay to state that the ratepayers and the members of the Board had always been in hopes, that Mr Wigley would consent to a ; track being made around the terrace. This work could be done for about £5 or £lO, and would obviate the necessity of Greeting the bridge. ■.>.•... Mr Deßenzy said Mr Wigley had given a site for a school, and perhaps he would be willing now to allow the track to be made. : Mr Kelland said Mr Wigley would not do so. Mr Barclay having withdrawn, and the mutter having been discussed, it was decided to allow it to stand over till the next meeting, in order to allow of the Ciiairman visi'ing the spot. . . .OVERSEER'S REP.ORT. obtaining land from Mr Sealey or lower ing the roudway, as the Blip has narrowed tin- road so as to make it unsafe for heavy traffic.
