SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

MILFORD. The monthly meeting of the Milford School Committee was held oc June 6th. Present—Messrs J. Brown (Chairman), J. Maze, J. Christmas, J. Macaulay, M. McKay, and K. Macaulay. MINUTES. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. correspondence# The following correspondence was read : From tbe Board of Education, dated May 6th, intimating that Mr Goldsmith would be sent out to take charge ot the school as locum itnem until Mr Hamilton was •■'bio to take up his appointment. Be pupil teacher, the Boar.! decided that Muster McLeod must enter as a first year pupil teacher. From Master R. McLeod, of Bulmer, refusing to take the appointment of pupil teacher of the first year. It was resolved that the Chairman see Mr Wiiite about his daughter (whether she would go to Timaru about the end of the present month for examination) that she might take cbe appointment ot pupil teacher. REPAIRS, ETC. Mr Hamilton, the Master, attended and asked that some repairs and improvements might ba attended to, viz., a new window in the west gable, a picket fence to separate the school from the Master’s house, and two new foot scrapers. It whs resolved—“ That the Chairman write to the Board of Education, asking them to grant a small sum to put a now window in the west gable, as on dark -Liya it is almost impossible for the children to see their work.” The meeting then terminated. GERALDINE. The monthly meeting of this Committee was held in the schoolhouse on Wednesday evening last. Present—Messrs W. SMas'ia (Chairman), R. H. Poarpoint, G. Taylor, A. White, J. Cunningham, and J. Riordaa.

Tire minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. THE ANNUAL REPORT. Mr Pearpoiut slated that while in Timaru he hud seen the Secretary of the S.O. Board of Education. That gentleman had told him that the balance-sheet ordered by the Board to be brought down to the Slat Dec. was for the Board’s own use, and that the retiring Committee should have brought down a balancesheet to the date of annual meeting of householders. CORRESPONDENCE.

Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows:

From the S.O. Board of Education, in reply to a letter from the Chairman, informing the Board that a deputation was appointed to wait upon the Board, with a view of obtaining a new building. The letter stated that it would be only a waste of time on tire part of the deputation to attend the Board, as its funds would not allow of them doing anything in the matter just now. From the same, re the recommendation of the Committee that Messrs Smith and Colbert be appointed to the positions of second master aud pupil teacher respectively, and endorsing the same. From the same, enclosing the decision of the Board re the sale of the present buildings, with a view to new ones. From Mr T. Powell, Temuka, ye the coal suppled to the school, a»d stating that the same was not according to the Committee a specifications.— After hearing the sub-Committee's report upon the coal delivered, it was decided to receive the letter only. FINANCE. The Chairman stated that the Cornmiltee’s credit balance at the bank was £6 13s. t’lio gross proceeds of the concert amounted to £lO Is 3d. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £8 9s 7d were passed for payment, ABSENTEES. The Head Master drew the attention of the Committee to the necessity of serving notices on parents of absentees. The Chairman and Mr Pearpoint were appointed to draw up a circular, and h*ve the same printed. MASTER'S REPORT. The Head Master’s report was read. It showed the average attendance during the month to have been 181.2. The Master also asked the Committee to regulate the length of the holidays, and stated his willingness that those during the year should be shortened, and those at Christmas time lengthened. He drew the attention of the Committee to the fact that the present caretaker not catting the wood used in the scheol necessitated his catting the day’s supply himself. He also asked for a supply of lamps to be obtained for the use of the drawing class, as they had to use the most primitive candlesticks at present. JBe the holidays—The Committee were of opinion that the present arrangement was the most satisfactory to the parents, and it was decided to giye a fortnight at midwinter, a fortnight at Easter, and three weeks at Christmas.

ifc the wood—lt was decided to employ a man to cut the next lot of wood into two feet lengths. It was decided to obtain the co-opera-tion of the Muster in getting up another concert, when the Committee would be in a {.osition to obtain the lamps asked for. VIBIXOBB. The visitors for, the month, Messrs Taylor and, Pearpoiot, reported having visited the school and found everything Working satisfactorily. They mentioned one or t*o minor repairs which were necessary. The Chairman and Mr Riordao were appointed visitors for the ensuing mouth, with power tooarry oat the email repairs necessary# DISTSIOX HIGH SCHOOL. Th* Committee appointed to deal with the matter of raising the school into a District High School, said they considered from the action of the Board of Education that the Committee had everything to hope for, and the same with regard to gelling a new school built.
