TEMUKA SECOND FIFTEEN J. SOUTH CANTERBURY SECOND FIFTEEN. This match came off last Thursday on : the ground of the Temuka Club. Play began at 3 p.m., and Timaru winning the f, toss took eastern goal, rnd Ogilvie kicked off for Temoka. In the early part .of the first spell the game was pretty even, but owing to sjplendid passing of the Timaru backs and the fine dribbling displayed by the forwards Temuka frequently had to defend its goal. Several very fine rone were made by the Timaru men, especially by Vallango, who ran oleao through the Temuka men, and chained the only try of the game right under the Temuka goal. He failed, however, to score, and the ball having got back into neutral ground t fow sharp scrimmages gave employment until time was called. In the second spell Yallange kicked off, and the ball was carried into the Terauki 26 without- delay, where a desperate struggle took place, till by dint ol hard work and good play the Temukt men succeeded in forcing it acrosi ' the field into close proximity to th< Timaru goal. For it time Temuka ap peared to have docidly the best of it, an< it was generally thought they would score but again the scientific play of the Tinian backs entirely changed the position o things, and the ball returned to the Te muka 26. The Temoka team no' changed their tactics, and following th example ol their opponents began t
pass, in consequence of which Clinch obtained tbe ball and made a magnificent i run—the event of the day—from one end of the field almo.t to the other. He ; passed all the Timaru backs, and th» i hopi a of the Temuka men ran high, but ; when almost on tbe touch lino he wis i collared by Reece, and a scrimmige I ensued. The Temuka men now began to play, and gave the backs several chances, but tbe opportunities were lost, and when tin'- was called Temuka were busy , defending thcr own goal. The Timaru , men played a good game, keeping well on the ball, and the forwards fed the backs, who played splendidly. The Temuka backs were weak, cue principally to th» fact that some of theii men were absent, Temuka started the game o»e man short, and shortly after they commenced McKay, of Orari, got his leg broken, and he had to retire, so the Temuka team had to play under great disadvantages nil through, and considering these facts it is certainly creditable that they were only defeated by one pc’ • 1 , A match between Temuka aud Winchester Clubs takas place on the ground of the latter to-day. GERALDINE WANDERERS. A special meeting of the members of the Geraldine Wanderers Football Club was held on Thursday last. There was a good attendance. Mr E.
