POLITICAL NEWS.
Mr Francis Franks, of Temuka, will centest the Geraldine seat at the forthcoming election. The Hon. W. Rollleeton has written to a gentleman in Temuka asking him to intimate that he would also stand for election against all comers. A numerously-signed petition was presented to Mr E. Acton, of Pleasant Point, requesting him to allow himself to be nominated for the Gladstone seat. Ho declined to comply with the request.
The return ordered at the instance of Mr Turnbull as to the coat of the Hall prosecutions has not yet been completed, but the Minister of Justice has said that the total cost to the colony, including the inquest on Captain Cain and the preliminary investigations, will be close on £3OOO.
Ministers are reported to have expressed the opinion that the elections will be held in about two months from the close of the session.
The Representation Act has been assented to, and will be put in operation immediately. Mr MeKerrow (the Sur-veyor-General), Mr Sparrey (Property Tax Commissioner), Mr Dobson, Dr Hislop, and Colonel Hamilton, the Representation Commissioners, are already in Wellington.
