RAUKAPUKA LICENSING COMMITTEE.
The annual meeting of this Committee was held in the Courthouse, Geraldinp, yesterday. Present Messrs W". U. Slack (Chairman), C. G. Tripp, A. H. Brisco, and W. S. Maaiin. MINDTES. The mmutps of the previous ordinary and a special meeting were read and confirmed. POLICE REPORT. Constable Willoughby's report upon the licensed houses in the district was read. It showed the whole of the bouses to be in good order, and well kept.
Mr Tripp spoke about the drainage of the Geraldine II tel, and asked if anything had been done in the matter. Constable Willougbbjf said a cesspit had been sunk to carry off the drainage when the hotel was built.
Mr Tripp said the attention of the Local Board of Health should be called to it, as the effluvia rising was a very serious matter,
Mr Sherratt said the cesspit was covered in and no effluvia could rise from that. The drainage went into the cesspit, and percolated through the shingle.
After 60tne little discussion upon the subject, it was proposed by Mr Tripp—- " That Mr Taylrr b» writ too to, calling his attention to the drainage of the hotel being turned into the sunk cesspit upon bid premises, thwre being no surface outlet for the water, the accumulation of which the Committee consider is dangerous to the health of the public, and that a copy of the resolution be sent to the Local Board ot Health."
Referring to the question of drainage the Chairman said he thought it would be best to have open concrete channels through the town and have tho water hrougbt from Macdonald's creek, or some other place, for the purpose of flushing then?. He thought that the money would have baen better spent in that way than in forming the ketbing to the footpaths as had been done, Mr Tripp fully endorsed all that the Chairman had said.
Mr Maslin thought they were going outside their functions to dictate to any other body as to how they should spend their money.
It was pointed out that if the open channels were formed Mr Tay ! or would then be liable to be fined under tha Police Offences Act for every time he threw slops into them. Mr Brisco thought the Chairman's idea was a very good one, but he did not see how it could be carried out. The Chairman thought it would be as well to make the suggestion to the Town Board that an open concrete channel should be constructed, and a supply of water be brought into the town to sluice the same.
Mr Tripp agreed to this, and it was added to the proposition, which was then put to the vote. The Chairman and Mr Tripp voted for, and Messrs Brisco and Maslin against it. The Chairman gave his casting vote in fapor of it.
