JUBILEE CELEBRATION.
Public Uxitiho. , Ip answer to the request of some sixty or seventy ratepayers Mr R. H. Pearpoint, the Chairman of the Geraldine Town ~Board/ oonvenied a public meeting on Tdday evening to take into consideration the best method of celebrating Her Majesty's Jubilee in Geraldine. Unfortunately several other meetings were held the same evening, and at the time appointed, half-past seven, very few persons had pntin an appearance. At eight o'clock it was decided to adjourn till a future dale, when a number of .ethers arrived and the meeting was held. /Mr Pearpoint, occupied the chair and briefly explained the object for which they had assembled. He also read a letter from Major Moots, in which that gentleman expressed his regret at not being able to be present, and hie thorough approval of aome scheme being adopted for celebrating such a happy and . unusual event as Her Majesty's Jubilee. He also made the suggestion that the celebration should take the form of a collection being made and forwarded to . the proposed Old Men’s Home in Christchurch, to be need if possible for the pur- ■ pose of maintaioing such inmates as migbt.be sent from tjifc Geraldine district. Ar-th'e Timaru Committee had decided to erect a foubtoinbe thought it would be ,a« well aa anything if Geraldine assiatod the Chtiatobarch institution. Mr Cunningham wm of opinion that it weuld be a great boon to the public, and ♦o future generations, if the celebration could take the form of making the present library a free institution. Mr Coltman thought it would boas welt to form a Committee to receive suggestions as to which would be bast means to adopt, to consider the same, and report at a future meeting. : Sherritt (thought so too. He did not'think a scheme could be formulated that evening, Bn thought if auch a Committee were appointed and the matter.made still more public there would be ainuob larger attendance. , The Chairman concurred. A Committee meeting was held immediately afterwards, at which Messrs Pearpoint, Cunningham, Sherratt, Waite, Quin, Taylor, Mundell, Coltman, White, and Gore were present. Mr Pearpoint was elected Chairman pro tem, and Mr Cunningham, Hon. Secretary and Treasurer. Mr Sherratt suggested that the Secretary write to those gentlemen, who had been elected, informing them of the fact, and requesting their attendance at a meeting to be held at an early date. It was decided to hold the nrx* meeting on Wednesday 27th (to morrow) in the Town Board office at 7 p.m. The meeting to be called by postcard, and the Secretary io writs to those persons elected. The Secretary was authorised to obtain a minute book and the postcards necessary} to. hare the postcards printed for that purpose ; and also to stale thereon that the Committee would be glad to receive the suggestions of any Committeeman unable to attend.
On the proposition of Mr Colt man, seconded by Mr Mundell, Messrs Pear* point, Cunningham and Sherratt were appointed a Committee to make all necessary enquiries as to the probable cost of making the present Library a Free Institution and to report to the next meeting. This being all that could be done, the meeting adjourned till Wednesday evening next.
