GERALDINE PUBLIC SPORTS.
A meeting of the Committee of these sports wss held in the Geraldine Hotel on Wednesday evening. Mr Darlow occupied the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Accounts in connection with the late sports meeting to the amount of £l9 15s 7d were passed for payment. The Secretary was instructed to draw up a list of the property belonging to the Committee. The balance-sheet was then read. It showed the total receipts, including subscriptions, entrance fees, gate money, and special prizes, to be £ll2 19s sd. The total expenditure, including prizes, the purchase of necessary materials, and working expenditure, to have been £74 17s lOd, leaving a balance to credit of £3B Is 7d, which w’as considered very good indeed. It was decided that Messrs J. Mundell and A. E. Hawkins should be requested to audit the books of the Committee. It was stated that sundry subscriptions which had been promised had yet to come in, which would probably swell the balance.
The question of counting points for the Champion Cup having been referred to the N.Z. Referee, it was decided to award it to A. Mcßeatb, who had, according to the Referee's decision, won it with four first and three second prizes, eleven points in all. The Keferee also decided that the second starter in the Bicycle race was not entitled to the second money, two men only having started. The Secretary was instructed to forward the cup to Mr Mcßeath. A public meeting was held at 8 o’clock. The attendance was very meagre.
The Committee’s report was read as follows:—“ Gentlemen,—Your Committee have much pleasure in presenting their report and balance-sheet for the period during which they have been in office. A public meeting was held at the Bush [nnj Geraldine, on February Btb, 1887, when the following Committee were appointed to arrange and carry out a programme of sports, to be held on March 17th, 1887 Messrs R. H. Reappoint, J. Cunningham, N. Dunlop, J. W. Pye, R. Darlow, J, Turner, and D. Mcllraitb. At n Committee meeting held afterwards Messrs Pearpoint, Cunningham, and Hiskins were elected Chairman, Treasurer, and Secretary respectively. It was decided to canvass the town and district for subscriptions towards the sports, which was done, and the sum of £44 17s was realised. An excellent programme o sports was prepared, printed copies of which were freely distributed between Dunedin and Christchurch, with the result that the nominations for handicaps were the largest ever received in South Canterbury, amounting to no less than 117. The post entries, too, were alsojvery large, being 62 in number, making a total of entries for all event sof 179. As you are aware the sports were held in the Geraldine Park on the l?th March, and were a signal success. The public attended in great numbers, and the amount realised at tbe gate was £34 7s fid. Your Committee are pleased to be able to report that sverything passed off without a hitch, no complaints being made to the Committee. This satisfactory result was so doubt largely owing to the assistance rendered by a nprohar of gentleman who kindly consented to aot as Stewards, and to fill various offices connected with the gathering. Your Committee also desire to express their thanks to the Committee of the Temuka Oddfellows’ Sports for the valuable assistance afforded them by allowing the use of a number of necessary articles for use at the sports. The thanks of the Copawitteg arp also 4«® *0 the Oddfellows* £fdge, Geraldine, for allowing tDe uae of their seats and platform for dancing on the day of the sports, The value of the money prizes totalled £46 18s 4d, to which must be added extra and special prices to the value of £8 145.” The report and balance.shoet was adopted as read. This being all the business the meeting terminated.
