An inquest was held at Dunedin on Wednesday on the body of Emily Palmer, a prisoner under sentence for vagrancy. It appears she was suffering from delirium tremens, and died from syncope. A civil case in the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Christchurch, on Wednesday disclosed a bad case of overdriving a horse. Purchell, the defendant, hired a mare from the plaintiff, Delamain, a livery stable keeper, to go to Dunsandel, 26 miles from Christchurch. He brought tier back in such a state that she dropped dead batf-an-hour afterwards. Delamain sued him for £25, and got judgment. A sheep-dip trial on a large scale; under the auspices of the' Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association took place at Spreydon on Tuesday and Wednesday. The brands competing were Merton and White's, Zealandia, Hatch's, McDougal’s, Little’s, Thomas’, Brooke’s, and Cooper’s, eight in all. 26tsbeep, nearly free from vermin, were' dipped in in each mixture. Mr E. S. Haj, a well-known Dunedin solicitor, committed suicide on Wednesday afternoon by cutting his throat. The suicide appears to have been of the most determined character. Mr Hay was living with his sister, who left him in the house. On returning she found that he had taken a basin, and then hacked away at his throat with a blunt knife, the basin being full of blood. He appears then to have gone to a bathroom, where the bath was found with blood and water mixed. His sister at once procured medical aid, and though when the doctor arrived Hay was pulseless, ho tore away at the wound with his nails. He died shortly afterwards. He was a single man, and had been indulging rather freely. It is supposed he committed the act while suffering under some strong delusion.
