'Fbisoo Mail.—This mail oloies at the PostOfiics, Geraldine, to-morrow (Friday), at 3 p.m. At Temuka the mail closes at 3.30. The Fisk Jubilee Singebs.—Steps are being taken in Geraldine to induce the Fisk Jubilee Singers, a very talented company, to pay the township a visit. Panobaha.—Robson's panorama of the Soudan War was exhibited in the Oddfellows' Hall, Geraldine, on Monday evening last. There was a gook attendance, but the majority of those present were children. Salb at Gebaldinb.—Messrs J. Mundell and Co. notify in another column that they will hold a sale of surplus stock, the property of Angus Maodonald, Esq., Waitui, at their sale rooms, Geraldine, on Wednesday 27th inst.
Resident Magistbatb's Court, Temuka. —ln consequence of the Reßideut Magistrate being engaged as Sheriff at the Supreme Court, Timaru, this Court wag adjourned till Wednesday nex'. Only two unimportant cases were set down for hearing. Mbbtins o? Cbbditobs.—The first meeting of creditors of Henry Drew, of Temuka, a bankrupt, will be held in the Deputy Asßignee's office, Timaru, at noon, to-morrow. The place of meeting was erroneously stated as Temuka in our issue of Tuesday last. The Mails.—The i.s. Alameda with the English mails of 23rd March, left Ban Francisco for Aucklank on the 9th inst., one day late. The Mariposa, with the colonial mails of 28th March, arrived at San Francisoo from Auckland on 16tb, one day early.
WoODBr/fiT Jooor Olcb.—A meeting of this Club was held in their rooms on Wednesday evening last. Mr F. E. Flatman occupied the chair. The following winning amounts were passed and paid:—R. G. Crocker, £23 15s 5 J. 0. N. Gregg, £2O 6s ; F. Bull, £l9; Mies Button, £9 10s; J. Worner, £7 2s 5 P. Gormley, £2 17s. Women's Fbanchisb Bin.—-The Women's Franchise Bill to be introduced by Sir Julius Vogel and Mr Ballanoe, contains only five clauses, and provides for women possessing the same qualifications, rights, and privileges as men, and subjects them to the same disqualifications, disabilities, and penalties. The date for the Bill ooming into operation, should it be passed, is left blank. Thb Qtjbbn'B Jdbiibb at Gbbaldinb.— In compliance with a requisition Bigned by Mr N. Dunlop and 69 other ratepoyeri, the Chairman of the Geraldine Town Board has convened a public meeting in the Town Board office, to-morrow evening, at half-past seven, to consider the best method of celebrating Her Majesty's Jubilee. It is to be hoped there will be a large attendance. Gbbaidinb Road Boabd Eleotiok.—• The election of three members of the Geraldine Road Board in the room of Messrs W. U. Slack', L. Grant (who retire in accordance with the Act, but are elegible for re-election), and R. H. Postlethwaite (resigned) will take place on the 4th May. Candidates must be nominated with tha Returning Officer, Mr C. B. Sherrult, before noon on the 27th April. Impobtant to Sbtilebs in Obabi Vllr I.AGB Sbttlbmbkt. —ln our advertising columns it is notified that any settler at present residing in the Villago Settlement of Orari is authorised to apply for and acquire additional land therein, which, with the present holding therein, shall net exceed five acres. Applications are to be made at the Land Offices, either at Chriatchuroh or Timaru.
TIMABP A. AHD P. Association.-—Tho monthly meeting of th« Committee of the Timaru Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held on Saturday. It was resolved to endorse the action of the Canterbury A. and P. Association in asking the Government to open the New Zealand ports for the importation of cattle and sheep, and that a general meeting of the Assooiation be convened for Saturday next to discuss the matter. Mr G. McKnight was appointed caretaker of the show ground, and accounts to the amount of £l4 12s were passed for payment. Ibbioation at Seadowjt.—A well attended publio meeting at the Waehdyke on Monday evening resolved—" That this meeting is in favor of the proposal to borrow £2500 under (he provisions of ' The Local Bodies Loans Act, 1886,' for the purpose of constructing irrigation works within the Seadown Water Supply District, and desires that the work be completed as soon as possible," also, " That the poll be taken on Wednesday, the 26th April, at the schoolroom, Wa*bdyke, and at the schoolroom, Kerrytown." It is estimated that £2500 will be sufficienfcfor the works required, and that a rate of 3-16ths of a penny in the £ per annum for 26 years (which will produce £136) per annum will cover the interest and sinking fund. Thmuka Daibt. FAOTOBT.—The monthly meeting of the Direotors of the Temuka Butter, Cheese, and Bacon-Cur-ing Company was held on Tuesday afternoon. Present Messrs J. Brown (Chairman), R. A. Barker, Mason, Cain, and t>r Hayes. The minutes of the previous ordinary and speoial meetings wer» read and confirmed. In consequenoe of the inferior quality of milk supplied by one producer it was resolved to instruct the manager to refuse any further supplies from the same person this season. Acoounts amounting to £26 18s 2d were passed for payment. The Secretary reported that during the past month 22,369 gallons of milk had been received, costing £325 16a 4d. It was arranged to hold future meetings on the second Tuesday in each month at 3 p.m. A considerable amount of private business was transacted, and the meeting terminated.
South Ob&bi Schooii Committee.—The monthly meeting of the South Orari Sohool Committee was held in the schoolhouse on Monday evening, 18th msfc. PresentMessrs It. A. Barker (Chairman), McLeod, Haughton, Ellis, Coles, Bissefc, and May. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence was read as follows :—From the Treasury, Wellington, re the proposed National memorial of the Queen's Jubilee; from the Education Board, re the annual election of Bchool Committees; from Mr Garrard, re closet pans. It was reported that notices re approaching election of School Committees had been distributed. It was resolved that Mr Coles procure the necessary closet pan. The Master's report was read and was considered satisfactory. The average attendance for the last month was—Boys, 16.7; girla, 19-7; total, 36.4. The visitor (Mr Ellis) reported that he had that day visited the school, and found everything going on satisfactorily. Another subscription list, amounting to £1 2s 6d, towards the treat was handed in. Aocounts amounting to £8 Is were passed for payment. After arranging to have the annual report and balance-sheet ready for the annual meeting the meeting adjourned.
Alleged Libel.—The libel case Ivess v. ! Kerr, claim £2OO, is set down for hearing at the Supreme Court to-day. Shipbuilding in Spain.—Tha Spanish Government is anxious to foster the shipbuilding industry at home, and alraady progress is being made with a proposed shipbuilding yard at Barcelona, whioh will be the first of any importance in that country. Surprise has been expressed at Barcelona having been chosen, as labor is Tory eoarce and expensive at port.—Nautical Magazine, February, 1887. Temuka Pbesbitbbian Chuoh.—ln our last issue we stated that it was rumored that the Key. D. Gordon had decided not to accept the call from the Temuka congregation. Since then we hare been shown a letter re* ceived from Mr Gordon by a Temuka resident, dated 18th April, in which he states /that the call had come to hand, and that he would put it in the hands of the Presbytery, but that it would require a few weeks to settle everything. The general tenor of the letter goes to show that though the rev. gentleman had not then decidnd to accept the oil), khe report as to his declining it was premature ; it is quite possible he may accept it. Football.—A match has been arranged to take place beiween teams chosen from the Temuka and Geraldine Clubs on Saturday [next in the Geraldine Park. At a meeting last night of the Temuka Club the following team was selected:—Full-back, J. W. Velvin 5 three-quarter-backs, Fiizgerald, Flint (Captain), and G. Velvin • half-backs, J. Clinch and Cleghorno; forwards, E. Smith, Cutten, Gray, Dyson, LeCren, Carr, Hope, Ogilvie, and Gunion. Emergency, W. Coltman. An express will leave the Wallingford Hotel at 1 o'clock sharp. Ail members are r«I quested to attend practice in the Temaka Park this afternoon at 4 o'clook sharp. Bubned to Death.—Las* Tuesday night Miss Minnie Gledhill, aged 20 year*, second daughter of George Glad bill, cordial manufacturer, Auckland, was fearfully burned at her father's residence, Ponsonby. The curtain of her bedroom had oaughl fire from the gas jet, and in putting out the flames the lady's dress ignited. Losing her presence of mind she rushed out and the air fanned . the flames, and she was terribly burned about the lower part of the body before effective help arrived. She lingered in great agony till yesterday morning when she expired. Her younger siiiter, aged 15, got badly'burned by tryteg to extinguish the flames. The neighbours put out the fire in the brdroom before much damage was done. Railway Refbeshment Rooms, Timaeu. —D. McGuinness begs to inform his numer ous friends, and the travelling public in particular, that having taken the above rooms for a fresh term he has decided to reduce the charges hitherto made, and in future* they will be as follow :—Breakfast in readineßß for early trains, Is 6d; Hot Lunch or Dinner, served up in the hitherto well-known profuse style, on arrival of North and South Express trains, Is 6d. Tea and Coffee always in readiness, and choice confectionery, &o. lhe lessee would especially draw attention to the Ladies' Private Dining-room, which has been speoially arranged and furnished for their convenience, A waitress is always in attendance.
