GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.

The monthly meeting of this Board was held in the Board room on Tuesday last. Present Mesrrs W. U. Slack (Chairman), F. B. Flatman, J. Kellaod, and L. Grant. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. TINDERS. The following tenders were then opened and dealt with:— Contract No. 214 road, Bankapuka Fiat: VV. Heyward, £65; A. Reid, £47; B. Eae and Co., £46 17s; B. O’Neil, £39; J. Webb, £3B 10s (accepted). No. 216 Constructing ford near Groundwater’s, Waibi Boad ; B. Trumpet, £9; J. Kalaugher, £8; J. Beckley, £7 10s; A. Reid, £6 10s; R. Rite, £6 2* (accepted). No. 216- Shingle, Denoon’e Road, Rangitata Flat,: W, Hayward, £lO6 ; J. Webb, £97 ; P. Burke, £92 ; D. Gregan, £79; A. Reid, £79; G. Rae, £7B; G. Hammond, £7710a (accepted). Sugrue, £l3 10s. The tender of Mr TaVender was accepted as the Board considered he was the person most interested in protecting bis land from the encr'okchment of the river. The Overseer t'6 have the lease drawn by a solicitor atid to make arrangementerwith Mr Tavender as to costs.

COBBSarpKpiNqp. , The following correspondence was read arid dealt with 'From Mr J.'Murray, Orari Station, requesting that the name of Robert 4 Hammond be substituted' on the rate foil for that of the executors of the late Mr W. K. McDonald for sections No. 9114 and 7781, Pleasant Valley, and Mr Thomas Somerville for sections No. 836 and 977,, Woodbury.—lt was decided to grant the request when' the consent of the other parties was obtained. Ffom Mr G. Dennistoun, calling the attention of the Board to the case of Mrs G, Fye as worthy of the attention of the Charitable'Aid Board.—lt. waa decided that that the Chairman should make enquiries into the merits of the case arid to interview Mr W. Moore, one of the charitable aid 1 ' officers for the district, with regard to it. From Mr A. Gould, calling the Board’s attention to the state of the drain on the road leading to the Waihi river, Macdonald’s road, and asking that It be deepened.—The Overseer was intruded to deeper! the' drain if he considered it necessary. From Mr S. 0. Graham, Chairman of the Kakahu School Committee, calling the attention of the Board to the necessity that existed for a bridge over the Kakahu river, near Bussell’s, to allow of children reaching the school.—lt was decided to recomiuerid the Chairman of the Schosl Committee to ask permission of Mr Wigley to allow afootpath tobe made for the children.

Palmer, asking that the Board would have the gates removed.bri the road "leading to Mr Wm. Palmer's, as he had a narrow escape from a severe accident owing to them. The gates he believed had beep erected by Mr Kalman without the leave of the Board.—-It was decided to ask Mr Palmer to try and arrange the matter with Mr Kelman. From Mr G, Hammond, Woodbury, applying for an extension of time to complete his contract of spreading and stonebreaking on Donkin’a Road, —It was decided to grant an extension of 10 days. From Mrs W. C. Andrews, Geraldine, requesting the Board to take into consideration the circumstances under which she bad been left in connection with; the pound. . She hoped that she would still bo allowed to remain in that position, but if forced to leave, that the Board; would grant her compensation for a number of improvements and additions Carried out by her husband, some of which'’ were mentioned in the letter.—lt was decided

From the Registrar General, Wellington, asking the Board to furnish the Department as soon as possible with the different heads of informatlonsot forth in the enclosed form of statistics for the year ending March 31st;'1887. INTERVIEWS. Mr S. E. Graham waited upon the Bdard with regard to the application of the Kakabu School Committee for a bridge over the river near Bussells, He pointed oat that at present there were 17 children having to cross this spot twice a day. He hoped (hat the Board would do something in the matter.—After some little conversation, during which Mr Graham pointed out what he thought would answer the purpose, it was decided to adhere to the resolution passed at au earlier part of the meeting. Mr Tagg waited upen the Board, and asked that something he done to the crossing near bis place. -He was informed that the Overseer would attend to the matter.

The Overseer’s report was read as follows : “ The Chairman Geraldine Boad Board. “ Sir,—l have the honor to report for the month ending date as follows The weather during the past month has been very favorable for shingling, and the contractors have made very good progress with the work at Belfield. The time allowed for comple,ion has expired on contracts Nos. 207 and 213. . The shingle is hll out on the former, and a few days’ fine weather will be sufficient to finish the work.—Mee’s Road, Four Peaks: As directed 1 have had the road leading to Mr Mee’s ‘ Road, Four Peaks’ Downs, put in good repair. I have also diverted the stream in the'river-bed above the Orari bridge at a slight cost.—Reserve at Belfield : I have inspected the river reserve at Belfield, and drawn up specifications and conditions for leasing the same for a term of five years.—l have selected'two acres of land for a shingle pit at the Eangitata Flat, and invited the tenders for shingling the road,—Footbridge : The piles in the old footbridge at Dobbie’s creek, oh the Orari Station road, arevery much decayed. This bridge is also too low in flbod time, and as the water at present Is exceptionally low it would be a favorable time'to replace the piles.— Culvert; A rough log culvert near the sawmill, Raukapuka Bush, has given way, and is quite rotten. I should advise that in replacing the culvert 18in stoneware pipes be used.—Rates; 1 have collected the whole of the rates due for the current year with the exception of £4l7s lid, which is owing in small sums, add principally by absentees,—l am, etc., f * WILLIAM Shiers, , “Overseer and Clerks”

The actions of the Overseer were approved of, and it was decided to carry out the works to the culvert and footbridge as suggested. SMALL BIRDS’ NUISANCE. Mr Coltman reported that during the season he had purchased 41,154 eggs, and 12,114 birds, for which he had paid £4l 4s 6d, He had received £4sjErom the Board, and enclosed, £3 15s fid, balance of cash left on hand. FINANCIAL. It was moved by Mr Flatman, seconded by Mr Grant, and carried—“ That the sum of £SOO be re-deposited with the Bank of New Zealand, Geraldine, out of deposit No. J 50087, falling due on April 20tb, 1887, for a period of twelve months, the balance and interest to be placed to current accoupt.” ACCOUNTS, i Accounts amounting to £341 11a 9d were passed for payment, WOODBURY CKMETBBT. Mr Flatman, as Chairman- ofthe Woodbpry Cemetery Board, stated that a portion of the Woodbury Domain had been set apart for cemetery purposes. There would be 1 a ; small port ion of roadway, which the Domain Board' would be willing' to hand over to the Road Board.—lt was decided to take it over in the usual manner. ANNUAL MEETING. It was decided to hold the annual meeting on Tuesday, May 3rd, and the Board adjourned till that date.
