GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL.
A. meeting of this Council took place yesterday. Present—Messrs J. Talbot (Chairman), W. Moody, J, Mackay, and W, Balfour. The following business was trans* acted
Mr Moody moved, and Mr Mackay: —That the Council do now strike a special rate in accordance with the pro* visions of the Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886, ofs-16tha of a penny in the £on all the rateable property in the Rangitata and Orari Water {Supply District for the purpose of providing security for a loan of £2500, borrowed under the provisions of the said Act, the said rate to be payable annually in one sum on the first day of May in each year until the said sum be paid off.**—Carried. The Bailer County Council wrote forwarding a resolution disapproving of the present mode of raising funds for Charitable Aid, and suggesting alterations. They objected at the outset that the burden of contribution should fall on localities according to population, bat should be pat on the shoulders of the rich.
Mr Moody moved, Mr Mackay seconded, and it was carried— (< That the members for South Canterbury be asked to nse their best endeavors to have the subsidies on rates continued to local bodies in order that the assistance to Charitable Aid be kept on its present basis.”
Complaints were received of the insecurity of the Winchester bridge,— The matter was deferred pending the receipt of funds. A circular inviting funds for the Jubilee celebtation in Timarn was received.
Mr Moody moved, Mr Balfour seconded, and it was carried this Council’s opinion upon the form the Jubilee Commemoration should take is that efforts should be made to establish a home for aged and destitute persons in South Canterbury, and that if this Council has the power legally to do so it will contribute to this purpose.’ 1 Mr Moody gave notion of his intention to move—“ That at next meeting a rate of one farthing in the £ be struck over the county, to be made payable on and after July I next.” Accounts amounting to £B9 7s 5d were passed for payment and the meeting adjourned.
