TEMDKA ROAD BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Temuka Road Board, was held last Tuesday.—Present—Messrs J". Talbot (Chairman), J. T. M. Ilayhurat, and Oanaran. MINUTES. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. ACCOUNTS. A Accounts to the amount of £lsl lis 4d were passed for payment. : CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was dealt with as follows: — / From Mr Michael Riordun, applying for pipes or timber for a crossing to section 11076, Swamp road, Temuka, as his pre*, sent one was rotten.—The Orerneer was instructed to inspect the ptoctj and allow pipes or timber if be deems the Board should do an. From Mr J. G. Rangitats, drawing attention to the impassable state of the fords and roads across the river and river-beds on the south streams of the Rangitata, tbe frequent Leafy floods haviog damaged tbem,—ln reply to the Chairman the Overseer said the man in charge of the ford had hardly been as prompt in making the ford right as he might have been, and io consequence he bad had to pat on some extra labor at tbe expense of the contractor.—Mr Can«v*» thought it migkt be as well to wait for a few days to see if the river were lively tP shift its course again,—Tbe Chairman said that was b,ib opinion, By next meet? iog the question would most likely be settled.- It was decided to instruct the Overseer to inspect the place and report at the next meeting, and in the mean? time, if he thinks necessary, have aDy temporary repairs effected. From Mr Cecil Perry, Tirnaru, rt gorse on R.S. 25573, asking that the matter might be allowed to stand over till next month when it would be attended to. From Mr H. H. Pitman, stating that he had forwarded a litbgraphad plan of

From Mr F. W. Stubbs, Clerk County Council, stating that it was the intention of the Cbunoil to levy a rate of Jd in the £, to wipe Oat existing liabilities of the Council and to carry out necessary works for another year, and suggesting that this should be done at the same time ae the Road Board etraok their rite, thereby effecting' a considerable ■eving.-r-The Chairman said usually this Board did sot strike their annual rate till a few months later, and taking into account the amount of fands in hand and receivable'there would be no need to do •o this year for two or three months.--Mr Hayhurst asked if the Road Board would save anything if they complied with the request.—The Chairman said the Board would not, but it would save the ratepayers some espouse. The notice of bbtb'rates on»M he delivered together, and the coll-< r could collect both rates at the aaine i-.rae. -After some further conversation it was decided that the Board would not strike their annual rate for a few months. The Board would not object to collect the County Council rate, if the Council so desires it, but are of opinion that it would be better for each body to . collect its own rates.

Guilt), Trevennu, asking that the road through Trevenna might be gravelled, a%c? requesting that he might be allowed t» take a few loads of gravel from out of tbf Board's reserves.—lt was deeidtd tocsll forteqderu for the work at once, and the Chairman was authorised to accept oae. The second request was granted. • From Mr M. Quinn, asking that Mr Geo. Bolton's name might be inserted on the rate roll in the place of his. —Granted, From Mr flvWeller, asking that bis Bame should b*> taken off the rate roll for roral sections Nos. 328 U and 32615, and that of Mr «T. G. Ruddeoklau substituted. —The usual conditions having been com* plied with'the application was granted. A post catd and two circulars re the celebration of the Queen's jubilee at Obristchurch were read.—The Chairman explained that he had net seen the post card or circulars till the second meeting had been held. The Clerk had replied explaining this, aud stating that in any ease, as steps were likely to be taken for the celebration in Tima*a, it would not have been likely that the Board yould be able to. assist.

A circular rt the Imperial Institute was also read. (A copy ef this as telegraphed from Wellington appeared in our columns a few days ago).—The Chairman said he did not know whether they had the power at a local body to give any moDey towards the objeOt referred to. He noticed that the Waimate County Council had agreed to give a centributicn towards the celebration of the jubilee at Timaru, but whatever a Couuty Council might do he did not think a Rqad Board had power to do eo, even supposing they had the inclination.

A telegram was read from Mr Wm. Deßenzy, dated March 29th, stating that a bole in the Temuka bridge was dangerous.—The Overseer reported that he had attended to the matter. OVBRBIER'S REPORT.

Tha following is the report for the month ; To the Chairman and Members. Gwtxsmbn,—l have to report for the past month as follow* :

Tenders have been invited for the following' works ;—Contract No. 1 Enlarging Canal drain, Orari j No. 2, forming and shingling road from Hae-hae- : e-moana riverbed to Xakahu road; No. 3, (loaning drain CljDe'a road) No. 4, cleaning drain, Badham's road. The occupiers of land adjoining the drain en Clyne'a road have consented to pay tbe usual share of the expenses of cleaning this draiD. Bo Mr Austin's application —The drain on Badham'e road being choked with watercress was tbe cause of backing the water on to Mr Austin's land ; temporary relief was given by dragging a few chains of the drua, but it is neceieiry to clean the drain to the otsek. Tenders nave therefore been called for the work.—Be application Trustees Peterson's Estate—As- the drain applied for badly required cleaning I have let the work privately at the rate of Is per chain.—Contraot Do. 76, forming road north of Orari, is completed and passed for pay* ment.—Contract No. 75, shingling part of Beaton's road, is almost completed.—Two wooden culverts Jtbat had broken through hare been re-placed.- The deck of the bridge near Mr Guild'e has been broken through ; it has been temporarily repaired, but will require strengthening and redeekmg before, next grain season.—Tbe road from Kakahu road to Has-bse-te-moana hiis been surveyed, and the deeds are now ready for signing. The, cheque for payment for this land has been: idrawh.' The fenoiag on t his rosd is being done, but as the ground is at present too dry ; for sod work, I purpose putting on twoor three extra wires until the bank agreed •on can be built;; Winebester Bridge—The fH}pin'gon the approaches to tbe Winchester bridge is falling down, but ss I am of opinion that, this, bridge must shortly undergo ex* tensive repairs, I have not attempted to vend it.—The BangiUta has again over? flowed its banks and damaged tbe fords oonr eiderably. As the contractor for keeping these fords in repair has neglected to repair them as soon as hi might have done, I have engaged labor to ismt in doing the work, and have not drawn the latt month's progresj payment.—l have, etc.,

No. 4—Cleaning drain, Budham'u road -M. Flaherty, £lO ; C. McAuliffo, £8; W. Qreenu Pay, £4 16 • 81 (accepted). INTERVIEW. Mr T. Parke, Milford, waited on the Board, and requested that about 10 chains of the road near his house might be shingled. The work was urgently required. In wet weather they could not to the seotion. He also requested that two dn ns might be cleaned out. —The Overseer said that the shingling was urgently required. Tenders were twice called for the work in the early part of last year, but none were receivad, and tenders were not invited the third time because the Board thought the season too far advanced. —After Mr Parke had withdrawn it was decided that tenders for the shingling fhould be invited at the same time as tenders were called for the work applied for by Mr <Juild.—With respect to the drain by Mr White's, it was decided the work be done provided Mr Parke pays a proportion of th • coat. With reKird to that by Parko'a road, the Overseer was instructed to report. [Mr Quinn took his seat while this aubjrtct was being considered]. MISCELLANEOUS. The Chairman was authorised to pay tlie amount due for the road through Mr Young's land, as soon as some arrangements had been sett'ed. The Chairman said che election would l»ke place the first week in May, and it was usually arranged so that the ordinary | meeting of the Board and annual meeting of ratepayers take plac9 on the same day.! —The Chairman was authorised to take i what steps were necessary, and the Clerk was instructed with regard to the anoual balance-sheets. The meeting then terminated.
