ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, March 31. A deputation of hop-growers waited on Lord Salisbury and asked that a fluty be placed oh the imported article, •ulding, in defence, that the cultivation of bops is being ruined by foreign imports. Lord Salisbury, in reply, said that he recognised the gravity of' the siiuation, and sympathised with' the growers, bat declined to promise that their request should be granted. The Board of Enquiry strongly condemned the luffing of the Ada Melraore’sbelm, and declared the mate wes guilty of a grave error. From evidence of those on board the Ada Melmore, it seems doubtful' whether she really carried lights or not at the time of the collision. The Times and Daily News express surprise at the extraordinary leniency of the Court, particularly: in passing over the mate’s conduct without punishment. 'The West Australian Land Company has resolved to increase its capital by £200,000, the directors finding half.

, The Queen’s journey to Cannes has been delayed at Laroche, owing to the train catching fire. Her Majesty was in no danger, and has resumed her journey, and will reach Cannes tomorrow. The fire was caused by the besting of an axle of one of the carriages.

AUSTRALIAN GABLE. Melbourne, April 1. The Treasury returns show the revenue of the colony for the past quarter amounted to £1,805,806, being an increase of £21,758 compared with the corresponding quarter of last year. The Customs during the' quarter have increased £20,528, and the railways have increased £44,861. Ihe revenue for the year ended yesterday amounted to £6,682,324, being fan increase of £332,675 compared with the year e, ing March, 1886, It is now certain 5 there will be a large surplus at the close of the financial year. Sydney, April 1. News has been received from Noumea that the brig Linda Weber put in there on the 6th March, dismasted in a hurricane, It is understood that Government propose to close the session, instead of taking a month’s interim, They propose only to deal with Bills relating to railway management and the appointment of a sixth judge, Parliament will meet again on Friday.
