The splendid baud of the French warship Duquespe, by permission of Admiral De Saint Hilaire, gave an open-air concert in Albert Park, Auckland, on Wednesday evening to 2000 spectators. They performed, among other items, the “ Kawau March,” dedicated to Sir Geo. Grey. At Wanganui'jn the case of Watkins v. the owners of the St. Kilda, a claim of £25 10a, value of a horse lost while being shipped, by a sling slipping, causing the animal to break his back, judgment went for the plaintiff. At Wellington on Wednesday the information against James O’Shea was dismissed, the prosecution not putting in an appearance. The Hon. P. A. Buckley and Mr G. S. Cooper, Under-Secretary, went to Masterton on Wednesday to be present at some experiments to test poison for the extermination of rabbits.
The Rugby Union at Wellington on Wednesday evening passed a resolution that it is inexpedient for a New Zealand team to visit New South Wales for two years at least. In the case of Scott Smith, solicitor, against Fischer, Bank manager, before Judge Broad at Queenstown, nominal damages being asked, the jury found for the plaintiff, one farthing, costs £25. Owing to the Hinemoa being required in Wellington, his Excellency the Governor suddenly changed his plana for his departure from Dunedin and left on Wednesday afternoon in the Hinemoa with Lady Jervois, Miss Jervoia, and suite. This change upset all the arrangements for the ceremony which was to have taken place. At the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Dunedin* on Wednesday, the case in which £SO damages were sought from John Brown, for trespass and damage to furniture was dismissed.
At the Supreme Court, Dunedin, on Wednesday, a case of some importance to farmers, storekeepers, etc., was concluded. McKenzie, a storekeeper at Balclutha, sued the British and New Zealand Mortgage and Agency Company for £2OO damages for breach of warranty in selling him rape seed instead of turnip seed. After hearing a lot of evidence a verdict was given for plaintiff for £lls 38s lid. At a meeting of the Benevolent Institution, Dunedin, on Wednesday, it was decided to prosecute a man for false representations. He had come to the Committee pleading poverty and inability to bury his wife, and money was given him. Since then it had been found that he was in receipt at the time of 7s per day, and had £6 or £7 coming to him from a suburban Borough Council. Isaac Herman, a Christchurch watchmaker, a bankrupt, bas been sentenced to one month's imprisonment by Mr Justice Johnston for not having kept the usual and reasonable books.
The third annual report of the Lyttelton Sailors’ Rome states that the institution is now self-supporting. 293 seamen were accommodated during the year, £1286 was deposited for safe keeping with the Superintendent.
In banco at Christchurch on Wednesday Mr Justice Johnston gave judgment for defendants in Enland v. Tramway Company. Plaintiff’s contention was that the Company had no proper authority to run a steam locomotive. He claimed damages for the loss of his eye by a cinder from the tram. It is stated that the Associated Insurance Companies have decided to raise the insurance tariff in Auckland by 25 per cent owing to losses by fire. The volunteer inquiry at Auckland is at a standstill owing to a legal objection taken by Captain McDonald to its proceeding. The New Zealand Shipping Company and Shaw Savill and Albion Company have decided to carry coastal passengers on their vessels, but the passage monsy is fixed at 60 pec cent higher than that bv by the Union Company's vessels.
