NEW ZEALAND ALLIANCE.
The first annas) meeting of the Non Zealand Alliance opened on Tussday morning with a breakfast in the Toong Men’s Christian Association Rooms, Auckland, when about 200 were present, The General Council opened at 10 a.m,, Sir W. Pox presiding. The report stated Sir W. Fox and Mir Glover had during the year addressed 158 meetings, all of which were followed by the enrolment of members and the formation of auxiliary societies. As the result of the year’s operations 96 auxiliary societies had been formed, 4000 members enrolled, and over £»6O received in contributions, The report proposes the formation of a guarantee fund tf £IOOO for election purposes. The balance-sheet showed of £B6O income, £219 8s 2d had been paid for Mr Glover’s expenses from England, and £462 5s 2d for his salary and travelling expenses. The remainder, with the exception of £3 2s, credit balance, being absorbed in printing and other expanses. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. Sir Wm. Pox was elected President, and Mr J. Newman Secretary of the Executive, with a long list of Vice-Presidents in the principal towns of the colony. Resolutions were carried (1) reaffirming the platform and policy of the organisation adopted at Wellington last March ; (2) recognising with gratitude
and pleasure the work done for the Alliance by the President, Sir W. Ft.x, and Mr T, H. Glover ; (3) acknowledging the generous contributions of James Tyer to the Alliance, but urging increased contributions,. seeing that unusual demands will be made on the funds consequent on the general election being imminent; (4} while recognising thh beneficial provisions of the Licensing Act the Alliance cannot deem any legislation satisfactory or final which withholds direct power to veto the issue of licenses in districts where the people are so minded, and ’pledging the friends of the Alliance to vote only for those candidates who are willing to give the majority of the people such power. At the annual meedng in the evening resolutions were carried of a similar tenor to the above,
