AUCTIONEER’S REPORT. TIMARU, Mr E. H. Guinness (for the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company Limited) reports for the week ended Saturday, March 26th, 1887, as follows : Cattle —At the Washdyke Yards the supply of fat cattle brought forward wcs not iu any way remarkable for numbeis or good quality. We quo e about 17« 6 1 per lOOlbs for prime beef, and 15s to 16s for medium with a alack demand. Stores are in moderate supply of various aorta, principally inferior old cpwa and young stock. The,rp. is a limited demmd for 3 and 4-year old steers for winter feeding. Sheep—On Thursday last at the Wash-, dyke Yards, a very large entry forward, all the yards and BR»ah paddock* being full, Naturally a very pro . portion of the yurdlDfif consisted. of medium Pud ha^ r jQr classes of sheep, hIR even for those"a clearance was obtained at rather better prices than those prevailing of late. There wns a decided improvement, especially for sound young half and crossbred ewes for breeding purposes. The great numbers of old and inferior sheep being boiled down, the export of our best young sheep is now ho extensive, that the effect will surely be felt sooner than was expected. Farmers are undoubtedly doing the right thing to secure good young ewes at the present low prices. The following are some of our transactions Pat merino wethers, 5s ; fat crossbred ewes, 4s 7d ; 2-tooth crossbreds, 4i 8d ; half-bred 2-tooth ewes (small), 4s ; crossbred lambs, 4a.

Private sales of Sheep.—Daring the week we have sold 2500 2-tooth merino ewes and wethers, 1000 2,4, and 6-tooth merino wethers, and have several large transactions pending.

Sheepskins—At Wednesday’s sale there was a full attendance of felltnongera, and prices were conisderably better in consequence, Our total sales privately and by auction amounted to 3124 skins, which realised as follows t —Best factory crossbreds, 3s to 3s 4d ; second, 2s 7dto 2s 10d ; butchers’ crossbreds, 3s to 3s 3d ; second, 2s 41 to 2s 10d ; boilers, best crossbreds. Is lOd to 3s for extra good ; merinos, lOd to Is 2d for owes, and Is 2d to la 9d for wethers ; station skins in bales, per lb. Hides— Prices remain una'tered. All on band have been quilted with a good demand.

Ram and Ewe Fail—A: -bi-i a mini fixture held at the Washdyke yards rbere was a considerable yarding of nuns from north and south breeders. Taking the low prices everywhere it passed iff fairly satisfactorily. Menlovi-, Oamaru, 12 2-tooth Lincolns, guineas ; on acconnt Mr Bonifant, Ashburton, 0 English Leicester at 3 guineas ; 6do d > at 2| guineas; 6do do at guineas ; 3 do do at 2 guineas ; on account Mr Thos. Palmer, Temuka, 2 Lincolns nt 2 guineas; 46 oid, on account of various owners, at 5« to 7a 6d.

AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. Sydney, March 26. New Zealand wheat, 3s 6d to 3s 9d ; New Zealand oats, Is 3d to 2s 3d ; maize, 3s 3d ; Sugar Company’s No, 1 pieces, £25 10s. ENGLISH MARKETS. London, March 24. Australian tallow, average quality— Beef, 23s 6d ; mutton, 28s. March 26. The wheat market is inactive, and prices are drooping. The new crop from Australia is quoted ai 37s and the old 6d better. Cargoes on ibe passage are quoted at 35a 3d, but sellers are asking Is moie. New Zealand wheat, ex store, is selling from 34s to 375. Owing to a glut in the market, flour is somewhat depressed. The weather is seasonable, and the crops are prosperous. At the wool sales 47 000 bales were caialogued, of which 25 000 were withdrawn. The market is firmer.
