The memo, with reference to colonial defences, which is now under the con* sideration of the Imperial Government, has been forwarded to the AgentsGeneral, but is regarded as strictly confidential, i'he Due de Aumale has forwarded £SOO for the Imperial Institute, as a murk of his attachment to the Queen. March 18. The amount subscribed at present towards the Imperial Institute fund is £IOO,OOO.
The Colonial Office has had under consideration tha report presented by Sir Hercules Robinson, Governor of Cape Colony, who was sent to Mauritius as Special Commissioner te enquire into the dissensions between Sir John Pope Hennessy, the Governor, and Mr Clifford Lloyd, the Lieut-Governor of that island. The decision arrived at is that Sir John Pope Hennessj's suspension must be confirmed, as in view of the irritated statu of public feeling in Mauritius, and the improbability of bis resumption of the Governorship beiog acceptable to the inhabitants, it is better for him not to rat urn to the colonj. March 19. The Bank of Australia has declared a dividend of 6 per cent., and £IOO,OOO of the reserve fund has been placed to the contingent account to make ample provision for doubtful accounts. March 20. The "cloture" .rules were finally adopted by a majority of 262 to 41, and will be put in operation forthwith. The Prince of Wales has started for Berlin. He will be present at the festivities in connection with the Emperor William's ninetieth birthday. Roiia, Feb. 17. Clarke was seized with a paralytic stroke this morning, and is now in a most serious condition, March 21. The foundation stone of Strong's Australian Church wi»s laid yesterday by Sir William Clarke.
