A man named Watkins, a plasterer, dropped dead while working on the Edenvine Hotel, Auckland. The Hon. Mr Reynolds is credited with insisting on reduction in Legislative expenditure as well as other branches of the public service. Major Campbell, Clerk to Parliament, is to undertake the duties of Examiner of Private Bills, an office left vacant by the death of Mr Eustace Brandon. This will save £l5O a year. The Burns Statue;Committee intend to have a great demonstration at Dunedin at the laying of the foundation stone of Burns’ statue. The diplomas and medals issued at the London Exhibition were received at Wellington on Friday. The Underwriters’ Association'have resolved to raise the rates of insurance 20 per cent on wooden-buildings in- business blocks. Henry White was committed for trial at Mastertou for attempting to burn the Prince of Wales Hotel. Mr Henry Harvey, Secretary to the Hokitika Harbor -Board, was -drowned whilst swimming in f the suff orf Friday. ' A boy named Stoning, 3£ years old, fell into the river atOhrifitahurchAon Friday while playing-'on the atejp 'ef the boatshed near Ward’s brewery and was drowned.
A storekeeper from Moawhanga Marinki (Wellington), named Louis Lawtop, was fined £2B 10s; and costs £4 19s KH, on Friday for sly grog selling. At a meeting at Christchurch on Friday night 1000 j)ersons.,being present, on the proposition of the »Pricbate i seconded by Mr Justice Johnston, it was resolved—- “ That in .the opinion of this meeting, a substantial memorial dedicated to Her Majesty the Queen and a fitting celebration of Her Jubilee should be organised in Canterbury.’' A large and influential Committee, representing all classes of the community, was-formed to carry out the resolution. It has not yet been decided what form : the memorial will take. A home for aged and infirm people has been suggested. At the Royal Dragoon Sports, held on Saturday at Onehunga, the police closed the totalisator as no permit had been obtained.
The Auckland Volunteer representatives returning froin the Rifle Association meeting, received an enthusiastic reception. The Mayor received them at the railway station, and made a eulogistic speech. The champion (Captain White), Captain Little, Gunner Parslow, the Mayor, and Lieut.-Cohnel Mason were driven through the town in a carriage and four greys, escorted by the Volunteer Corps. Queen street was ablaze with bunting.
As a result of the recent interview with Mr Salience on the sugar-beet question, it is probable another effort will be made to establish the industry at Waikato. A lad named Burkett was tossed and gored by a bull at New Plymouth on Saturday morning. He is very badly hurt, and has been brought into the hospital. '
The Wellington Evening Post and Press Association have been served with writs at the instance of Messrs McMahon and Leitch, claiming £IOOO damages for alleged libel. , An informalion has been laid against a merchant of Wellington chorgibg him with fraudulent dealings with regard to some promissory notes. The amount involved is £l5O.
H.M.S. Nelson arrived at Wellington from Lyttelton on Saturday morning, and left again for Sydney at four o’clock, where Rear-Admiral Fairfax relieves Admiral Tryon, the latter going Home by the steamer leaving Melbourne.
A man named James Hersen received spinal injuries at Whiteman’s Valley, Wellington, on Friday, and the case is considered critical. The resident surgeon hopes he will be able to save life. ! The Invincible Company (Otago) have crushed 167 ounces of retorted gold from 280 tons quartz. ■ At the invitation of Mr Jas. McDonald, proprietor, a hirgo party visited Walton Park, near Dunedin, on Saturday, to witness the starting of the machinery for the manufacture of Portland cement. Specimens of concrete made from the cement were tested iu various ways and were found to be quite equal to any imported.
