Thb Humbls Bee. - We have been informed on good authority that boys have killed a lot of hilmble bees in the neighborhood of Temuks. Some steps ought to be taken to prevent this.
■ Aeowhenua Town District.-— I The Clerk to the Arowheniia Town Board notifies that all rates not paid before the 21st March will be sued for, and all owners of unregistered dog» will be prosecuted.
The Timabu Habbob Boabd Action.— The Shaw-Savill and Albion Gompany’e suit against the Timam Harbor Board for the loss of the ship Lyttelton comes on at Wellington on Monday. A big bar is engaged. The Queen’s Jubilee.— At a meeting of the Cabinet on Thursday it was decided that the date of the Queen’s accession be proclaimed a public holiday in honor of the Jubilee. Further celebration to be left to the public bodies unless Parliament decides that Government should lake part.
New Justices OF the Peace.— The new Canterbury Justices of the Peace are, Mr N. K. Bowden, Sydenham, Dr. 0. Guthrie, Lyttelton j Messrs J. T. M. Hay burst and J. Guild, Temuka ; Mr J. Innes, Amberley; Messrs F. H. Pickering and A. C. Wilson, Christchurch j Mr F. E. Gillingham, Fairiie Creek, Mr G. D. Greenwood, Waipara. Railway Returns.— The following are the Railway returns for the four weeks ended February sth; —Receipts; Mid He Island, £55,237; North Island, £27,825; total, £B3 063; total for same period last year, £83,142. Expenditure: Middle Island, £35,819; North Island, £20,838; total, £66,675; total for same period last year, £51,972. Leaseholds.— ln our advertising columns the School Commissioners of the Provincial district of Canterbury invite tenders for the lease for 21 yerrs of a number of reserves. A great part of the land is situated on Holies* ton’s Road, on the north bank of the Orari, and some of it is situate at the Waitohi Flat, West Melton, and Burnham. The land is well worth the attention of selectors. A New Use fob Straw.— At the meeting of the Geraldine Road Board held on Tuesday, the Overseer stated that he bad found from experience that wheat straw was one of the best things that could be used to protect the banks of the river. To keep the straw from washing away it was found necessary to erect a wire fence in the riverbed, and place the straw inside. When it became thoroughly wet it proved a most efficient protection. Geraldine Pdblic Sforts.— A meeting of the Committee of these sports was held at the Geraldine Hotel on Wednesday evening. Present—Messrs R. H. Pearpoint (Chairman), J. Cunningham, J. W. Pye, R. Dario w, D. Mollraitb, J. Turner, and the Secretary. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Secreiary laid before the Committee the list of nominations for the handicaps, which was considered highly satisfactory. The sub Commit tee and Judges for the various events were definitely appointed. The subscription lists were brought in, and the result of the canvassing was found to be most encouraging. After transacting some routine business a vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the meeting.
S.C. Hospital and Charitable Aid Boabd. —The monthly meeting of the above Board was held on Wednesday. Present— Messrs John Jackson (Chairman), John Talbot, Walter M. Moore, William Balfour, and R. A. Barker. Dr Ewart, a recent arrival from England, was appointed Resident Surgeon. A latter from Dr Hogg, advocate ing the appointment of a visiting medical staff to the Hospital, brought on a long discussion. Mr Talbot was in favor of the proposal, while Mr Barker opposed it. Ultimately the matter was left over. The Chairman was authorised to attend to certain matters in connection with the drainage of the Hospital, and certain charitable aid matters having been dealt with the meeting terminated.
New Episcopalian Church.— On last Thursday His Lordship the Primate consecrated the new church at St. Andrews, in the presence of a large congregation. He was assisted by the Yen. Archdeacon Harper,' and the Revs. L. 0. Brady (Incumbent), T. Jasoer Smythe, T. A. Hamilton, and 0. Coates, The usual ceremony of Consecration was conducted in a solemn manner, after which the morning prayer was read by the Incumbent. His Lordship the Primate then preached an impressive sermon from the text “ Seek ye My face,” etc. The singing was nicely rendered, Miss Bone presiding at the harmonium. The building is constructed of wood on concrete foundations, and is handsomely finished and very substantially built, i Mr Foden was the contractor, and has carried out bis work satisfactorily. Aeowhbnua Cbmetbbt Board. —A meeting of the Arowhenua Cemetery Board was held on Wednesday. Present— Messrs Gray (chairman), Blyth, Aspinall, Hayhm-sr, Meason, Brown, and Meyer. Accounts to the amount of £4olos were passed for payment. The matter of the site for a garden in connection with the new cottage having been discussed,it was resolved—''‘That in consideration of Mr Hayhurst having given up his right to the four acres let to him atthe December meeting, the Board agree to let the remainder ot the Reserve (9 acres) from year to year at the same rental as formerly until such time as he gives notice of giving it up, or until the Board gives him notice that thev will require it for cemetery purposes.” The chairman and secretary were directed to arrange with the caretaker in regard to fencing garden, etc, and the meeting terminated,
Entbetaibmbnt at Gebaldinb. —On Wednesday evening next the Geraldine Band of Hope will give an entertainment in the Good Templar Hall in aid of the prize and general great fund. The entertainment promises to be a very good one, and as the charge for admission is to be only sixpence no doubt the Hall will be well filled.
B.M. Ccmjet, Timabu.— At the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Timaru, on Friday last John Gibson was fined 5s for drunkenness, and a prohibition order was issued against him. A charge against D. Mahoney of selling liquor an Sunday was adjourned till Monday, Isaac Greaves, John Brosnaban, John Keefe, Hugh Brosnaban, John Nolan and Michael Soannell were fined in various amounts for allowing catile to wander at large.
Gebaldinb Public Sports. —ln addition to the large and really first-class list of prizes offered by the Committee several valuable cups and .trophies have been presented. Two cups, one presented by Mr Dunlop and the other by Mr Cunningham, both of really first class workmanship and handsomely designed, are on >iew at Mr N. Dunlop’s store, while the handsome silver cup presented by Mr W. Coltman and the silver cup presented Mr B. H. Paar point are on view at their respective establishments and are a source of considerable attraction. A list of special prizes offered by the Committee appears in another column, and also the handicaps. Mr Ballanoe on Protection.— A deputation from the Auckland Industrial Association waited upon Mr Balance on Thursday to see if Government would contribute £1 to £1 if ft Company were formed for the purpose of erecting a plant to make raw or refined sugar from beetroot, the Government contribution not to exceed £2,000 to, be chargeable against the bonus offered by Parliament for the first J ,000 tons of best beet sugar produced, provided the Company succeed iu manufacturing that amount by the new process lately discovered. The plant would cost £3,000 to £4,000. Mr Ballance said that the idea had his full sympathy. He was in favor of protecting this industry and all other Colonial industries. The subject of fostering the industries of preserved fruit and jam manufactories, cornflour, and starch was gone into. Mr Ballance was assured that 600 women and girls could be employed if these industries were protected. As to preserved milk, Mr Ballance said that he believed Mr J. C. Firth intended to manufacture it at Matanaka. Mr Ballanoe promised that all the matters should have Government’s favorable consideration. At the request of the deputation Mr W, A. Graham, the Mayor of Hamilton, accompanied them.

Tea and Coffee always in readiness, and choice confectionery, &o.
