OPENING OF THE N.S.W. PARLIAMENT.

Sydney, March 9. Parliament was opened to-day, with the customary ceremony, by the Governor, who in bis speech announced that the session would be of short duration. . It was proposed to deal mainly with.financial matters. A Bill would be introduced without delay to establish a Customs tariff, and to give effect to the emphatic verdict of the electoral bodies in favor of the prineiple of unrestricted freedom to the development of the' industries of the colony. Measures would also be proposed for the better working of the railways, and for the protection of the colony from the influx of expirees from New Caledonia, which latter it was hoped would receive the support of other colonies. Other bills were promised, but not to be introduced this session. The speech further announced that it was intended to celebrate the Queen’s jubilee and centenary of the colony, and the House would be asked to approve the steps to be taken.

John Henry Stubbs, charged with setting fire to a house at North Shore, Auckland, was discharged. The Magistrate said that the conduct of the accused at the time fully justified the police ia arresting him.
