SOUTH ORARI SCHOOL.
The annual treat and distribution of prizes to the children attending the South Orari School came off on Friday last, 25th February, at the school grounds. The j morning was fine, but in the afternoon it rained so heavily that the. sports' programme had to be cut short. The arrang in -ita made by the School Committee. .»»••> of the inoßt thorough description, aud elicited expressions of unbounded satisfaction from all present. About noon young and old were invited to partake of a sumptuous repast of cakes, ■andwiches, etc., etc., of which a superabundance was provided. The tables were spread in the schoolroom, and were presided over by Mesdames Bisset, May, • Coles, and Munro, ably assisted by Muse* Bisset, May', Coleß, Austin, and others, all of whom worked with a heartiness and a will exceedingly pleasing to behold. Having fully satisfied the cravings of the inner man all adjourned to the open air, where various games were contested until too heavy rain interfered. At inter- .' vals during tbe sports a supply of lollies, apples, and nuts were distributed. Mr T. B. Pierce generously gave one case of apples and one of nuts, and Mr Ellis one case of apples. T he sports were under -the euperintendency of Messrs Bisset, Ellis, Coles, aid Naughton, members of the Committee, assisted by the Master and \ ■■■ the Popil Teacher. The other memr"- bers of the Committee; were unavoidably absent. The two first-named gentlemen deserve special mention for their assiduity in completing arrangewents for the sportn. Payne and Jane May 1, Jessie V McLeod and M. A. Austin, and M. Biss«i and E. Vernal 1 were equal. Gymnastics (Boys)—Wm. Payne 1, Geo. Stewart 2. Gymnastics (Girls)—Edith Vernall 1, Jessie McLeod 2. 220 Yards Raoe (Girls)— Mary McLeod 1, Winnie May 2. 200 Yards Married Women's RaceMrs Buckley (teapot) 1, Mrs G. Loach ;tlib tea) 2. •A young men's 220 Yardp Race was w very exciting and well contested, and Uncaused intense merriment. The prize, a of cigars, was won by Mr A. Stewart. About 4 P« m - aD adjournment was schoolroom, where another V onslaught was made on the eatables. This being over the Chairman of the School Committee (Mr R. A. Barker) proceeded to distribute the prize. Before doing so he gave a short but sensible and practical address, in tfhich he advised the <young to make the beat of present opportunities for intellectual improvement, so as to become good and useful members of society, and urged the parents to do their duty, especially in the matter of the regular attendance at school of their ■'< children. Mr Pearson's prize fell to Charlotte Bates. Miss Austin's prize was given for the infants' race. After presenting each pupil #bo did not win a prize with a book, the teachet explained the basis on which the prizes had been distributed, viz., the results ol the quarterly exaraiuatioos held by hin during the paßt year. Votes of thanks were then accorded to the ladies who assisted, to the donors of gifts and prizes, to tho School Committee, to Mr Munro (the teacher), to Master Jno, McLeod (the pupil teacher), and to the Chairman. This closed the dayV proceedings, which were voted by all ;w unqualified success. Murwgting, etc., prevented many from attending during the day, but towards 9 p m.. 'vhon the dancing commenced, the musa , especially of the young people, increased considerably. Mr A. B'saul tnad« a very efficient M.C., and music was discoursed by Mews J. Behrens, T. B. Pierce, and R. McLeod. Es»rly on Saturday morning the crowd finally dispersed, all having apparently enjoynd themselves thoroughly.
