THE SOCIALISTIC RIOTS.

London, Feb. 9. A large assemblage of people in connection with th® proposed commeration of last year’s Socialistic riots congregated yesterday evening on Olerkenwejl Green, It is estimated that at least 10,000 were present. Hundreds of mounted and foot policemen were in attendance for the purpose of preventing an outbreak and disorder, but the arrangements were not complete, and they were only partially successful in their efforts to avert another serious disturbance. Incendiary speeches having been delivered by the leaders of the movement, attempts were made to light torches for the procession through the streets.' At this juncture the police

iiitf-rf red and prevented the kindling of the todies. They also broke up the assemblage. The mob, however, dispersed in three different directions, thus paralysing the efforts of the police. One contingent of the Socialists went in the direction of the City, and the men armed themselves with granite blocks, which they found lying on the streets where the tramway repairs are in course of being effected. With these they smashed the house and shop windows as they marched along. They looted one shop, that of a butcher, the owner of which fired at them with a revolver but injured no one. The municipal police eventually met the rioters in Newgate street. They arrested several and dispersed the rest. The sections of the mob which wem westward, owing to the frost and the absence of leaders, melted away before they could do serious damage.
