A force of Spaniards landed at Mindanao, one of the Fhillipine Islands, and dispersed ft gathering of rebels, It is expected that Mr Goschen’s intention to stop the English subvention to Egypt will result in failure to pay the coupons. The Tories are blaming Mr Goschen for his action. The Standard states that Earl Onslow succeeds Lord Dunraven as Undersecretary for the Colonies. Later. The celebration of the Queen’s jubilee took place to-day in the various cities and towns throughout India. The proceedings were everywhere of a most brilliant character, and great enthusiasm was displayed. Grand native processions took place, and special religions services were held at night. Most of the towns were brilliantly illuminated, The jubilee was further celebrated by the wholesale release of prisoners in for petty crimes and debt. '■ Feb. 16. Lord Dufferin, in receiving addresses in connection with the Queen’s jubilee, delivered a speech, in which he expressed approval of the ambition of the natives to gain wider control of the domestic affairs of that country. AUSTRALIAN CABLE. Melbourne, Feb. 16. Mr Trotter, Acting British Consul at TougA, now bn a visit to Australis, had an interview yesterday with the Premier. He declared the British residents at Tonga regard the situation with much Anxiety, and urged that the Imperial Government be asked to intervene, with a view to the settlement of affairs. Feb. 17. The election returns show that 64 supporters of the new Ministry and 20 of the Opposition have been returned for the Legislative Assembly, A collision occurred to-day off the Heads between the steamer Coonanburro and the brig Syren, of Auckland. The brie was seriously injured. Feb. 17. Good rains have fallen over the whole colony. Ihe Lubeck has arrived from Apia. She brings news that the six men convicted of the attempted assassination of the Rev. S. Baker were shot at Malona Island on the 12th of February. He added that if the income tax failed to realise their expectations the Government would propose the imposition of a property tax on a basis similar to tbit in force in New Zealand. Port Darwin, Fab. 16. , The Euphrates has been kept afloat since striking the rock. Sha is, bowover, leaking badly, and has 6ft. of water in her hold. Feb. 17. The ship Euphrates, which struck on a rock recently about 20 miles from this place, has been abandoned by her crew, and is sinking. Brisbane, Feb. 17. A considerable quantity of rain has fallen over a large area of this colony. THE SITUATION IN EUROPE. Berlin, Feb. 16. The action of His Holiness the Pope in seeking to influence tbe elections for the Reichstag has caused a split among the members of the Centra Parliamentary party. A manifesto has been issued by Prince Hohenlohe appealing to the electors of Alsace and Lorraine to return Government supporters and officials to the Reichstag. • St. Petersburg, Feb. 16. General Kaulbars has been appointed Military Attache to the Russian Embassy at Teheran, in Persia. London, Feb. 16. Heavy military credits are asked for in the Austrian Reichstrath and Hungarian Parliament, in anticipation of additional demands by the Delegations. Feb. 17. Stock on the Paris Bourse have risen, consequent on the. safety of the passing of the Bill for increasing the German army for seven years. Prince Hohenlohe has warned the electors of Germany that a war is certain unless the Bill for increasing the German army for a period of seven years is p?ssed.
