Lott has been committed for trial at Auckland on a charge of passing counterfeit coin. The friends of Penn have applied to have his body after execution. The Minister of Justice replied that the disposal of the body would be at the discretion of the Sheriff, and that if the Slier ff was satisfied that the funeral would be qniet, and without demonstration, the Government would- not object to the body being given’ to* his friends for burial. Penn, on being interviewed by his mother said, “I know, mother, what my doom is, but I am innocent of murder.” ,• At the distribution of prizes at Napier in connection with the Rifle Association reference wa? made toi the smallness of the aggregate scores as compared with last-year, and this was ascribed to the use bf 1 Auckland ammunition. There is some talk at Wanganui of a new trial In the Pope-Connolly case, though the grounds of the application are not made clear as yet. The Harbor Board at Westport has expended during 1886 (exelusiva of interest and eiqkingfumt), £57,789, and the west breakwater is extended 870 teet. Captain Widerstrura, of the schooner 1 Mary Wadeley, just arrived at Westport from Napier, reports that on the 9th lost, offOourangi Point, bearing five miles east, he saw a large number of waterspouts, and had to steer clear of them. At first they appeared like dots, and gradually increased in size. Clouds were revolving at a tremendous rate from right to left. The water could be seen continually ascending in brilliant stripes form ng a most lovely network in a great pillar. At the surface of the sea the waier was boiling and smoking, sending up white spray in all directions. The waterspouts disappeared at sunset.
