The Temuka Leader SATURDAY, JANUARY 22, 1887. DISORDERLY HOUSE.

We are glad to have an occasion to* compliment the jTemuka police on their conduct. It seldom happens that they give us the opportunity, ~ they have hitherto done little worthy of commendation but in bringing to light, the disgracefnl con-; duct carried on in Bryant’s house, which is situated within 100 yards of the Post Office and 20 yards,of the Courthouse in the most public part of Temuka, they have certainly done good service. The Court,,too, in condemning the house as a disgrace to the town, and in suggesting that it should be removed, did a meritorious thing, and we trust the matter will not rest there* I'be property belongs to the trustees of the late Mr Mendelsoo, and as we,believe they derive very little benefit from it, we trust they will remove it. If not they ought to improve it so as to render it habitable, and insist on the tenant 1 keeping it in a decent order. As it is.it spoils the look of an otherwise clean and decent town, and suggests ;to the visitor’s mind that Tetnuka is a place where there is very little regard for clean or orderly habits, We have no desire to see - the present .occupier, deprived of house shelter, /tie, is a . miserablei victim 'o^temperance a poor unfortunate wret^li''rendered despicable by his own vices, and it may be that it would not be easy for him to get another house:. We cannot help pitying him, but, at the sanie time, it appears to v us, .that it is of no use to deal leniently with him.’ He Is a good tradesman, if. he. liked to work and attend to his business, and it is quite possible that it he were more severely: (’eall with ,‘he: could be forced to-do- better than he has. been doing,' At any rate his habitation is a disgrace to the town, .and. something ought to be done to cause the owners to remove so unsightly an object. The dirt and filth about there is dangeroqs ; to the health of the community, and ii appears to us the Town-Board ought to. insist on cleanliness; - being strictly observed. '
