It ia expected that a prosecution for peijury will arise oat of the : Gaehanga arson case. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of W. B. Waters on a charge of embezzling certain money belonging to the Land and Loan Company, Wellington* Mr Charles Cook’s (solicitor, of Wanganui) conduct‘.was reviewed in banco by the Court, at Wellington on Wednesday morning, and it was shown that a sum of money entrusted to him by W. P. Chadwick had been lent to a relation, and the mortgage was made oat in bis own name. This be afterwards pledged to bis banker, and Chadwick experienced some difficulty in getting back the money. On Cook’s behalf it was admitted that his conduct was wrong, but it was urged that it did not amount to more than an error of judgment, The Court took this view, merely ordering Cook to pay the costs of the proceedings. , Tenant’s Cordial and Wine Factory, Maclaggan street, Dunedin, was burned down on Wednesday morning. The building belonged to him, and was insured in the South British for £l7O, and the machinery in the same office for £IOO, and in the National for £4OO. Hall the latter was reinsured in the New Zealand office. It is supposed the cause was spontaneous combustion. ; Grant’s hotel, at Gore, was horned down on Wednesday. The building was insured for £IOOO in the North British, of which the National, London and Lancashire, and Norwich Union have each £250; also in the Equitable for £SOO. The stock was insured but to what amount is unknown. The Otago Land Board on Wednesday decided to forfeit a large number of deferred payment licenses if selectors do not reduce their arrears within one or two months.
